MEMPHIS – After a two-hour, seven-minute rain delay forced a late Saturday start time, the Memphis Redbirds racked up ten hits in a 10-0 defeat of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at AutoZone Park.
Memphis (69-56, 22-28) opened the scoring against Jacksonville (62-61, 20-29) starter Karson Milbrandt (L, 0-6) in the bottom of the first inning when Victor Scott II walked, moved to third on a Colton Ledbetter single, and scored on a Nolan Gorman groundout to hand the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.
Memphis tacked on two more in the third inning after loading the bases with nobody out. A leadoff single for Noah Mendlinger and back-to-back walks from Scott II and Ledbetter set up a run-scoring groundout from Leo Bernal. Gorman bounced out to plate another run one batter later to put the Redbirds ahead 3-0.
A five-spot in the fourth inning brought Milbrandt’s night to a close. Bligh Madris began the frame with a walk and scored on a Ramon Mendoza double. Scott II brought around Mendoza with a double of his own. Following a Ledbetter walk, Bernal (16) capped the rally with a three-run home run to push the Memphis advantage to 8-0.
The final Redbirds runs arrived in the seventh thanks to a two-out rally. Madris reached on a walk and advanced to third on a fielding error on a ball put in play by Mendoza. Madris then scored on a wild pitch, which placed Mendoza on second. He scored on a Mendlinger single to cap a 10-run night for Memphis.
The series concludes Sunday at 2:05 p.m ET/1:05 p.m. CT with Jacksonville searching for the series win against Memphis left-hander Josh Fleming (4-6, 3.16).
Coverage begins at 1:50 p.m. ET on ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
