JUPITER, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads (12-21, 49-50) earned their fourth shutout of the season as they blanked the Clearwater Threshers (18-14, 58-40) by a final score of 9-0 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The win snapped the Threshers’ five-game winning streak
In the bottom of the first inning, Jupiter took the early lead off Clearwater’s starting pitcher Yordanis Guerra (L, 0-1). PJ Morlando hit a one-out double and Max Williams blasted his second home run of the year to right field to give the Hammerheads a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Jupiter added another run in the bottom of the second inning when Echedry Vargas hit an RBI single to left field for his 53rd RBI of the season to give the Hammerheads a 3-0 lead.
Jupiter starting pitcher Jake Clemente finished his start with three innings pitched and allowed one hit, two walks, and struck out three batters. Jonas Uzcategui was the first Hammerhead to come out of the bullpen in the top of the fourth inning. Uzcategui recorded two outs but allowed two baserunners before Ian Medina (W, 2-1) came in to record the final out of the frame and leave the bases loaded to hold the 3-0 lead.
The score remained until the bottom of the fifth inning when Jupiter added some more runs. Morlando led off the frame with a single to right field and Williams drew a walk to put two runners on base. With one out, Luis Cova smacked a two-RBI double to right-center field to give the Hammerheads a 5-0 lead after five innings.
Medina finished a season-high 3 1/3 shutout innings with just two hits allowed and four strikeouts.
The Hammerheads added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Luis Cova hit a two-out double off the left field wall and Yoffry Solano drove him in with an RBI single to give Jupiter a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Hammerheads added three more runs. Williams drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single and Solano added a two-RBI single to extend the Hammerheads’ lead to 9-0.
Samuel Carpio entered the game for the top of the eighth inning and finished the game on the mound for Jupiter without allowing a run to cap the 9-0 shutout victory on Thursday night.
Morlando finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, stolen base, and three runs scored. For Morlando, it was his first three-hit game since May 1 at Dunedin. Williams and Solano each had three RBIs in the contest with Williams also scoring three runs. Every hitter in the Jupiter starting lineup reached base safely at least once.
