Vargas Homers Twice, Hammerheads Beat Mets 7-3 on Sunday Afternoon

August 16th, 2026

JUPITER, FL – The Jupiter Hammerheads (21-26; 58-55) win five games out of six as they defeated the St. Lucie Mets (17-30; 50-63) by a final score of 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Echedry Vargas makes Hammerheads history with his 20th and 21st home runs of the season and finished the series with five home runs.

In the top of the second inning, the Mets jumped out to an early lead against Jupiter starting pitcher Jonas Uzcategui. Kuhio Aloy led off the frame with a solo home run to left field to put St. Lucie ahead 1-0.

After that, Uzcategui settled down and finished with four innings pitched and allowed one run, three hits, one walk, and struck out a career-high seven batters in a no-decision.

The Jupiter offense had no answers for St. Lucie starting pitcher Will Watson who pitched three scoreless innings in a rehab appearance. However, the Hammerheads took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning in historic fashion. The Mets brought in Candido Cuevas () to pitch as PJ Morlando led off with a single to right field. Two pitches later, Vargas launched his league-leading 20th home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Hammerheads a 2-1 lead after four innings.

Hamlet Garcia (BS, 2) came in to pitch out of the Hammerheads’ bullpen. Garcia tossed a scoreless top of the fifth inning. However, Aloy hit his second solo home run of the game to tie the game at 2-2.

Jupiter got an immediate response by none other than Vargas who hit a solo home run to left field, his league-leading 21st home run of the season, to put the Hammerheads back on top by a 3-2 score after six-innings. For Vargas, it was his fifth home run and second two-home run game of the series. It was also the third two-home run game of the season for the Hammerheads’ infielder.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jupiter loaded the bases against St. Lucie relief pitcher Jose Guevara. Yoffry Solano hit a ground ball to the shortstop Elian Pena, who touched second base, but his throw to first went into the first base dugout, which scored two runs. The next hitter, Jeremy Almonte, lined an RBI double down the left field line to extend the Hammerheads’ lead to 6-2 after seven innings.

Eric Guevara added one more run to Jupiter’s total in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI single back up the middle. It was his first RBI as a professional and extended the Hammerheads’ lead to 7-2.

Ian Medina was called upon to pitch the top of the ninth inning. Medina walked four hitters, which allowed one Met to score, and was pulled from the game. Davidxon Lara (Sv, 2) inherited the bases loaded with two outs but got the final out without further damage as Jupiter secured the 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon to take five out of six games over St. Lucie.

Overall, Jupiter is now 12-6 over St. Lucie in the regular season. In the win, Almonte extended his hitting streak to 14 games which is the longest active hit streak for Jupiter.

Vargas became the first Hammerhead to hit 20 or more home runs in a season since Marcell Ozuna hit a franchise-record 24 home runs in 2012. Vargas also became just the fifth Hammerhead all-time to reach 20 home runs (Kyle Jensen, 22 – 2011; Jim Kavourias, 20 – 2003; Christopher Schwab, 23 – 1998 as a Montreal Expos affiliate). To put in perspective on Vargas’ home runs, he has 13 home runs in his last 24 games and 15 home runs since July 10th prior to the All-Star break.

After Sunday’s finale, the Hammerheads will play one more series against St. Lucie in the regular season between September 1-6. The Hammerheads begin a six-game series on the Florida west coast on Tuesday, August 18 to face the Bradenton Marauders. Jupiter’s final regular season home stand will take place between August 25-30 against the Tampa Tarpons. Click here to purchase your Jupiter Hammerheads tickets.
