MIDLAND, Mich. – Will Gagnon partnered with three relievers on a five-hit shutout, and the Great Lakes Loons (32-23, 68-51) edged the Lansing Lugnuts (24-31, 53-66), 2-0, on Wednesday night at Dow Diamond.
The game began in a one-hour delay as rain swept through Midland, leaving a rainbow cresting from foul pole to foul pole.
The game itself was far less scenic, with Eduardo Quintero scoring the game’s only runs on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and a wild pitch in the fifth.
The Nuts’ hits: a Rodney Green, Jr. double in the second inning, though Green was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple; a Pedro Pineda single in the third; a Green single and Myles Naylor single in the seventh; and a Jared Davis single in the ninth, but Davis was caught stealing at second to end the ballgame.
Lansing starter Jackson Nove gave up both runs on four hits and three walks in five innings, striking out four. Griffin Kirn followed with two hitless innings of relief, and Mitch Myers tossed a perfect eighth.
The Lugnuts have lost ten of their last 12 road games (compared to winning 13 of their last 15 home games).
Right-hander Samuel Dutton starts the third game of the six-game set, opposed by Loons right-hander Brooks Auger at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
