‘Pigs Stun WooSox With Five-Run Ninth to Salvage Finale
Trailing by four, ‘Pigs capitalize on two errors in ninth to snap losing streak
Worcester, Massachusetts (August 9, 2026) – Trailing by four entering the ninth inning, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (18-21, 53-61) shocked the Worcester Red Sox (24-14, 60-49) with five in the frame to rally for a 7-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park.
Pressed into a bullpen game as scheduled starter Alan Rangel was recalled, the ‘Pigs led 1-0 after two frames thanks to an Otto Kemp homer. Kirby Snead provided length to begin the game on the mound, working a season-high 3.1 innings, but two unearned runs gave the WooSox the lead after four innings.
In the fifth, a string of three straight two-out run scoring singles (including a two-run knock) gave the WooSox a 6-2 edge.
Gabriel Ricones Jr. launched his first homer of the season to start the sixth to cut the deficit to four, but entering the ninth nine straight ‘Pigs hitters had been retired.
Carter Kieboom snapped that string by walking to start the frame before a throwing error allowed Tommy Pham to reach. Otto Kemp followed with an RBI single before Paul McIntosh doubled home a pair to quickly cut it to a one-run game. Steward Berroa then dropped down a sacrifice bunt that coaxed another throwing error, allowing pinch-runner Colby Thomas to score, tying the game, with Berroa going to second. Another sac bunt moved Berroa to third before a Kameron Misner sacrifice fly scored Berroa for a 7-6 lead.
Lou Trivino III (S, 5) came on for the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to close the game out for the ‘Pigs.
Making his triple-A debut, Brandon Beckel (W, 1-0) earned the win with a scoreless eighth, striking out a pair.
Wyatt Olds (L, 4-5) was charged with five runs (two earned) in the ninth for the WooSox, taking the loss.
Following an off-day on Monday, the ‘Pigs return home to Coca-Cola Park on Tuesday, August 11th to play host to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
