Memphis splits doubleheader Thursday at Jacksonville

Redbirds dominate game one, allow walk-off single in game two

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Memphis Redbirds continued a six-game road trip at the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Triple-A, Miami Marlins) with a doubleheader split on Thursday night at Vystar Ballpark. 

Memphis used the longball to jump ahead quickly in game one’s 11-4 victory. Third baseman Nolan Gorman drilled a two-run shot as part of a four-run top of the first inning. Center fielder Joshua Báez clobbered his 32nd home run of the season with a two-run homer in the second. Báez finished game one 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. 

Starting pitcher Brandt Thompson (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out five to earn his first career Triple-A win. Andrew Schultz worked a scoreless frame in relief and struck out two batters. 

The Redbirds dropped game two in walk-off fashion by a final score of 4-3. In the loss, designated hitter Thomas Saggese hit his seventh Triple-A home run in 2026. Saggese and first baseman Ramon Mendoza both posted a multi-hit effort while second baseman Noah Mendlinger drove in two runs. 

Starting pitcher Jared Shuster allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out two over 2.1 innings pitched. Hancel Rincón and Victor santos posted scoreless relief work for Memphis in the back end of the doubleheader.  

The Memphis Redbirds return to AutoZone Park on Tuesday, August 4 to begin a six-game homestand against the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A, Milwaukee Brewers) with first pitch scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CDT.
