Conrad Smashes Homer, Birds Clipped By Fireflies 10-8

Irigoyen and Conrad register three-hit nights in loss

COLUMBIA, S.C. (August 8, 2026). – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (14-27, 41-64) dropped game five against the Columbia Fireflies (21-18, 54-50) 10-8 on Saturday night at Segra Park. The Pelicans now trail 4-1 in the weeklong series.

With the score tied 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth, Columbia took the lead. Josh Hammond singled and then moved to second on a wild pitch. The next batter Camden Johnson drove an RBI single to give the Fireflies a 9-8 lead. After Johnson stole second and third, he scored on a wild pitch to extend the Fireflies lead to 10-8.

The Fireflies tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. JC Vanek and Conor Rasmussen worked walks. Following a lineout, Daniel Lopez hit an RBI single that scored Vanek and then Rasmussen scored on a throwing error to make the score 8-8.  

Columbia trailed Myrtle Beach 8-5 entering the bottom of the sixth when they started to mount a comeback. Daniel Lopez walked and later stole second base. A batter later Josh Hammond smacked an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Myrtle Beach rallied all the way back in the top of the fifth. Caden Sorrell lined a leadoff triple and then scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-2. With runners on second and third, Jhoander Irigoyen lined a two-run double to cut the score to 5-4. The next batter Corey Nunez smacked an RBI double to knot the game at 5-5. Then Fernando Cruz walked and Nunez advanced to third on a wild pitch. In the next at-bat, Ivan Cespedes reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home Nunez to give the Pelicans a 6-5 lead. Then Jan Reyes lined an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-5.

Trailing the Fireflies 5-0 entering the top of the third, the Pelicans mounted a comeback. Ethan Conrad roped a double and then scored on an RBI single from Eli Lovich to make the score 5-1.

Columbia started the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple from Sean Gamble.

The Fireflies increased their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second, capped off by RBI singles from Henry Ramos and Hammond.

RHP Yeri Perez (1-0, 5.75) received the win for the Fireflies. RHP Geovanny Vasquez (0-1, 13.50) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach will conclude their six-game set against the Columbia Fireflies (Single-A Kansas City Royals) on Sunday, August 9 at Segra Park. First pitch is slated for 5:05 PM. RHP Anhuar Garcia (1-0, 2.95) will start on the hill for the Pelicans. LHP Darwin Rodriguez (5-5, 3.60) gets the ball for the Fireflies.
