Pelicans Rally Comes Up Short, Drop Series Opener 10-7 To Woodpeckers

Nunez extends hitting streak to eight games

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 18, 2026). – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (18-30, 45-67) fell in game one of the six-game series against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (27-20, 59-53) 10-7 on Tuesday night at Pelicans Ballpark. With the loss, the Pelicans trail in the weeklong series 0-1.

The Pelicans entered the bottom of the ninth trailing the Woodpeckers 10-6. Alexis Hernandez drew a one-out walk and then moved to second on a single from Caden Sorrell. The next batter Jhoander Irigoyen laced a single to load the bases. In the following at-bat, a wild pitch scored Hernandez to cut the deficit to 10-7 but that was all the Birds’ offense could muster.

Fayetteville started the scoring in the top of the second courtesy of a three-run home run from Juan Sierra (10) to make the score 3-0.

Myrtle Beach took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Sorell singled and later moved to second on a groundout. After Sorrell stole third, Eli Lovich singled home Sorrell to trim the score to 3-1. After Derik Alcantara singled Sorrell to third, Jose Silva was walked to load the bases. Jan Reyes followed with a walk to score Lovich and make the game 3-2. After a pitching change, Juan Cabada smacked a two-run single to give the Birds’ a  4-3 lead.

The Woodpeckers jumped back in front in the top of the six. Owen Nowak doubled and then moved to third on a wild pitch. A batter later Aaron Piasecki singled home Nowak to tie the game at 4-4. After Piasecki stole second, Kam Durnin was walked and then a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Then Logan Hughes roped a two-run double to take a 6-4 lead. Following a wild pitch that moved Hughes to third, Kevin Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly to bring Hughes which extended the lead to 7-4.

The Birds’ came back in the bottom of the sixth. Nunez doubled and then moved to third on a single from Derik Alcantara. The next at-bat, Ivan Cespedes singled home Nunez to cut the deficit to 7-5. One batter later, Cabada grounded out which scored Alcantara to make the game 7-6.

Fayetteville tacked on three more runs in the eighth and the ninth, capped off by a two-run single from Sierra to make the score 10-6.

RHP Brandon Cassedy (3-0, 2.73) received the win for the Woodpeckers. RHP Julio Valdez (1-1, 4.15) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans. RHP Tazwell Butler (S,2) got the save.

Myrtle Beach will continue their six-game series at Pelicans Ballpark against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Single-A Astros) on Wednesday, August 19. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM. RHP Jubrayker Salaya (0-0, 0.00) will start on the hill for the Pelicans. RHP Juan Fraide (5-1, 2.96) gets the nod for the Woodpeckers.
