Sorrell’s Big Night Lifts Pelicans Over Fireflies 6-2

Pocol fans career-high four in relief

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (September 2, 2026). – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (21-40, 48-77) took game two against the Columbia Fireflies (30-31, 64-63) 6-2 at Pelicans Ballpark on Wednesday night. With the win, the Pelicans tie the weeklong series with the Fireflies 1-1.

Cubs 7th overall prospect Caden Sorrell had himself a career night at the plate. Sorrell tallied a career-high three hits and five RBI while also scoring a run.

RHP Ashton Pocol was magnificent in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while racking up a career-high four strikeouts.

Myrtle Beach started the scoring in the bottom of the third. Juan Cabada reached base on a walk and then moved to third on a double from Juan Tomas. Tomas went 2-4 with a run scored in his Pelicans debut. After Corey Nunez drew a walk, a wild pitch scored Cabada to give the Birds a 1-0 advantage. Then the next batter Sorrell (4) launched a three-run home run off the right field foul pole to extend the Pelicans lead to 4-0.

Columbia retaliated in the top of the fifth. Ivan Sosa singled and then scored on a two-run home run from JC Vanek (14), that cut the deficit in half 4-2.

The Pelicans added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ivan Cespedes lined a single to lead off the frame. Following two consecutive wild pitches that moved Cespedes to third, Cabada was walked and then stole second. After Nunez was plunked to load the bases, Sorrell slapped a two-run single to stretch the lead to 6-2.

LHP Hayden Frank (4-9, 5.05) received the win for the Pelicans. RHP Jesus Oliveira (2-1, 7.30) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans.

Myrtle Beach will continue their final homestand of the 2026 season on Thursday, September 3 against the Columbia Fireflies (Single-A Royals) at Pelicans Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM. RHP Kevin Camacho (0-2, 12.46) gets the start on the hill for the Pelicans. RHP Ryan McDonagh (2-4, 5.44) will get the nod on the mound for the Fireflies.
