Game Summary: The Oklahoma City Comets stormed back with four runs after the seventh-inning stretch, including a go-ahead three-run homer from Alek Thomas, to seal a 7-5 win against the Las Vegas Aviators Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Las Vegas (18-13/62-42) took an early lead with a two-out RBI single from Joey Meneses in the first inning. The Aviators added a solo shot from Brayan Buelvas in the second inning and tacked on a run via a Max Muncy single coupled with an error in the third to take a 3-0 advantage. Oklahoma City (15-15/56-48) broke the ice in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from Noah Miller and tied the game with a two-run fifth thanks to a RBI triple from James Tibbs III and a RBI bunt single from Ryan Fitzgerald. Las Vegas jumped back ahead, 4-3, in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice. Both teams exchanged a run in the seventh inning, as after the second homer of the game from Buelvas, the Comets received a RBI single from Tibbs to make the score, 5-4, Las Vegas. Oklahoma City took its first lead of the game in the eighth inning on the three-run homer by Thomas on the way to a third consecutive win.
Of Note:
-Oklahoma City has won three straight games for the first time since winning four in a row July 8-12 against El Paso heading into the All-Star break. The Comets have now won seven of their last eight home games and are 8-2 in the last 10 games at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark…The Comets finished July with an 11-12 record.
-Alek Thomas crushed a three-run homer in the eighth inning as part of a 2-for-5 game. The homer was his sixth with the Comets. He is now riding a four-game extra-base hit streak. During those four games to open the series, Thomas is 8-for-20 (.400) with four doubles, one triple, one homer and five RBI.
-James Tibbs III finished 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs scored. The outfielder collected multiple extra-base hits in a game for the first time since his two-homer game May 28 at Sugar Land. Tibbs netted his first three-hit game since July 12 vs. El Paso.
-Ryan Fitzgerald set a career-high with his 126th hit coming on a RBI bunt RBI single in the fifth inning. He reached the total in his 98th game of the season.
-Austin Gauthier matched James Tibbs III with a team-high three hits, also adding a double. The infielder matched his season-best in hits for the fifth time this season and first time since July 19 at Tacoma.
-José Rodríguez recorded a season-high 3.0 innings, four strikeouts and 37 pitches. The righthander didn’t allow a run in relief, surrendering just one hit and one walk on the night.
-Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Ben Casparius continued a Major League Rehab Assignment and tossed one-third of an inning with one run and four walks. He threw 21 pitches (five strikes)...Through three rehab appearances with the Comets, Casparius has tossed 2.0 innings with two runs, one hit, eight walks and two strikeouts. He has been on the IL since April 13 as he recovers from right shoulder inflammation.
Next Up: The Comets continue their series against the Aviators at 7:05 p.m. Saturday on Salute to Armed Forces Night presented by Casey’s.
