Game Summary: Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith hit a two-run home run as part of a Major League Rehab Assignment for the Oklahoma City Comets who were edged by the El Paso Chihuahuas, 4-3, Tuesday night in the series opener between the teams at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Chihuahuas (16-35/51-75) scored two runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Carlos Rodríguez and Gage Workman. After loading the bases in the fifth inning, El Paso’s Mason McCoy connected on a RBI single before a bases-loaded walk extended El Paso’s lead to 4-0. Smith put the Comets (29-22/70-55) on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, sending a two-run homer out to left field in the fifth inning. OKC loaded the bases in the eighth inning before a sacrifice fly by Ryan Fitzgerald trimmed the deficit to one run, but the Comets were unable to complete a comeback.
Of Note:
-Following back-to-back wins to close out their previous series in Sugar Land, the Comets lost Tuesday’s series opener to fall to 2-4 in the last six games…Oklahoma City dropped a series opener in a fourth consecutive home series although the loss was just OKC’s third overall in the last 12 home games.
-Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith opened a Major League Rehab Assignment Tuesday and went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. In the third inning, he threw out rehabbing San Diego Padres outfielder Samad Taylor who was attempting to steal second base…Smith was placed on the Dodgers’ Injured List June 11 with neck inflammation and transferred to the 60-day IL July 21.
-Tuesday marked OKC’s fifth one-run game in the last six contests and second straight game decided by one run…Each of OKC’s last four losses have come by one run and the Comets are 17-20 in one-run games overall this season.
-Hyeseong Kim went 3-for-4, recording at least three hits in a game for the seventh time this season and first time since July 29 against Las Vegas. Zach Ehrhard and Ryan Fitzgerald also collected multi-hit games for OKC.
-El Paso’s two runs in the third inning ended a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings by the Comets pitching staff. Tuesday was just the second time in the last nine games OKC allowed more than three runs by an opponent.
-The Comets’ offense has been limited to three runs or less in five of their last six games and have scored a total of 15 runs over the six-game stretch, batting .189 (37-for-196).
