Game Summary: Alek Thomas hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the ninth inning and the Oklahoma City Comets scored three runs over the final two innings to defeat the Round Rock Express, 5-3, Thursday night at Dell Diamond. The Comets (36-24/77-57) scored in the second inning on a balk, and Round Rock (33-27/64-71) evened the score in the third inning when Cooper Johnson hit a solo homer. The Comets regained the lead in the fourth inning with a RBI single by Austin Gauthier. In the seventh inning, the Express loaded the bases with one out and scored two runs, with a sac fly by Johnson and go-ahead RBI single by Jonah Bride. Ryan Fitzgerald tied the game in the eighth inning when he hit two-out double, and Matt Gorski scored all the way from first base. With two outs in the ninth inning, Thomas hit a two-run homer to left field to put the Comets back in front and provide the eventual game-winning hit.
Of Note:
-The Comets have won six straight games and seven of their last eight games. Among the six straight wins, five have been last at-bat wins, including Thursday…The Comets have started a series with a 3-0 lead for the third time overall this season and first time since Aug. 4-6 at Salt Lake…At 77-57 overall, the Comets are a season-best 20 games above .500.
-The Comets won their seventh straight game at Dell Diamond and have taken eight of nine games at the venue this season.
-In addition to five of the last six games, six of the last nine games and seven of the last 11 games have been decided in a team’s final at-bat.
-Following up his two-homer game Wednesday, Alek Thomas broke a tie with a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning Thursday. It’s the first time in his career he has hit three homers over consecutive games…Thomas has collected a hit in 13 of his last 14 games with the Comets, going 21-for-59 (.356) with five doubles, two triples, four home runs and 17 RBI.
-Jackson Ferris tossed 5.1 innings with one run, two hits, two walks and eight strikeouts in a no decision. Through the first five innings, he retired 15 of 16 batters faced...Across his last four starts, Ferris has allowed three runs and 19 hits over 22.1 innings with 28 strikeouts. He’s struck out at least eight batters in three of those starts.
-Ryan Fitzgerald finished 1-for-3 with a double and RBI to continue a 10-game hitting streak. He’s 15-for-37 (.405) with seven extra-base hits and nine RBI during the streak...Fitzgerald has put together three of the Comets’ five double-digit hitting streaks this season...With 154 hits this season, Fitzgerald is now in sole possession of third place on OKC’s single-season hits list during the Bricktown era.
-The Comets allowed four runs or less for the sixth straight game and 19th time over the last 21 contests.
