Game Summary: Led by 13 strikeouts across 7.2 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Jackson Ferris, the Oklahoma City Comets clinched the PCL second half title with a 12-0 victory over the El Paso Chihuahuas Wednesday afternoon at Southwest University Park. The Comets (45-26/86-59) took the lead in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly by Chadwick Tromp. The Comets put together a six-run seventh inning, collecting six hits and two walks to take a 7-0 lead. El Paso (24-47/59-87) was shut down by Ferris, who began his start with 6.1 perfect innings before having the streak ended by a Miguel Andújar infield single. The comets added five more runs in the eighth inning, capped by a three-run blast from Chris Newell. The Chihuahuas finished with two hits, matching the fewest allowed in a game by the Comets this season.
Of Note:
-The Comets are headed to the PCL championship series where they’ll travel to take on first-half champion Las Vegas in a best-of-three series beginning Tuesday, Sept. 22. The Comets will search for their second PCL championship in a four-year span...OKC has reached the postseason five times during the team’s affiliation with the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2015 and have advanced to the league championship series three times.
-The Comets recorded their 13th shutout victory of the season and 10th of the second half…OKC’s 13 shutouts in 2026 are the teams’ most since at least 2004 and the most in the PCL since San Antonio collected 14 during the 2019 season…Wednesday marked one of 11 all-time shutouts in the Bricktown era while scoring at least 12 runs.
-Jackson Ferris tossed 7.2 scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and a career-high 13 strikeouts as he matched a career-high 102 pitches. The left-hander recorded the most strikeouts by an Oklahoma City pitcher since Emmet Sheehan also had 13 strikeouts June 25, 2025 at Sacramento. Ferris became the sixth pitcher in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown era to collect at least 13 strikeouts in a start. He also tossed Oklahoma City’s longest start since Yefry Ramirez threw a complete game May 12, 2022 at Round Rock...Over his last six games, Ferris has allowed four runs in 36.0 innings with 22 hits, 11 walks and 48 strikeouts.
-Ryan Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI, a walk and three runs scored. He tallied his 100th RBI of the year, joining teammate James Tibbs III in triple digits. It’s the first time in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown era multiple players have collected at least 100 RBI and the first time two players on the same team in the PCL have done it since 2019...Fitzgerald upped his doubles total to 34 on the year, placing him seventh in Bricktown era single-season history.
-Zach Ehrhard went 1-for-3 with a RBI, two runs scored and two walks to extend his hitting streak to a season-best eight games. During the streak, Ehrhard is 14-for-30. He’s now up to 113 runs scored on the year, tying Ryan Ward last season for the Bricktown era single-season record.
-Coming off the bench, Chris Newell went 2-for-3 with a homer and a Triple-A best four RBI. Newell went deep for the second time in as many days and for the third time in the last four games...The outfielder drove in at least four runs for the fifth time this season, last done Aug. 22 with Double-A Tulsa vs. Amarillo.
-Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edwin Díaz continued a Major League Rehab Assignment with a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit as he tossed 15 pitches (11 strikes). The three-time All-Star and three-time Reliever of the Year is recovering from neck inflammation.
