Game Summary: The Oklahoma City Comets evened their best-of-three Pacific Coast League Championship Series against the Las Vegas Aviators with a 7-2 win Wednesday night in Game 2 at Las Vegas Ballpark to force a decisive Game 3 Thursday. Oklahoma City brought home a pair of runs in the third inning on a double off the bat of Zach Ehrhard. The Comets scored again on a two-bagger from Hyeseong Kim in the fourth inning before James Tibbs III sent a three-run blast into the pool in right-center field during the following frame to build a 6-0 lead for OKC. Las Vegas got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with a two-out double from Brayan Buelvas before the Comets extended their lead in the eighth inning with a solo homer by Ryan Fitzgerald. The Aviators led off the ninth inning with a solo homer from Joey Meneses, but Paul Gervase retired the next three Aviators batters to close out the win.
Of Note:
-Oklahoma City evened its best-of-three PCL Championship Series against Las Vegas, 1-1. The series wraps up Thursday with a winner-take-all contest as the Comets look to claim the franchise’s first league title since 2023…Thursday will mark the fifth winner-take-all playoff game for Oklahoma City during the Bricktown era, but first in a Championship Series.
-After losing Game 1 of a playoff series, Oklahoma City is now 8-5 in Game 2 contests during the Bricktown era. OKC improved to 6-10 in elimination games during the Bricktown era, including 3-4 on the road.
-Oklahoma City allowed its fewest runs in a postseason game since a 5-2 series-clinching Game 2 win in the 2023 PCL Championship Series against Round Rock.
-James Tibbs III went deep for the second straight game, collecting his 32nd home run of the season overall. He’s homered in each of his last three games and has homered seven times across eight total games at Las Vegas Ballpark this season.
-Making his first career postseason start, Landon Knack recorded season-highs of eight strikeouts and 6.1 innings pitched with one run and five hits allowed in the win. Knack fired his second quality start of the year and first since Aug. 18 at Sugar Land. Across three September starts with Oklahoma City, including Wednesday, Knack allowed one run across 14.0 innings with 10 hits, three walks and 15 strikeouts.
-Ryan Fitzgerald belted his first career postseason home run and increased his overall season total to 17. The infielder has driven in four runs during the first two games of the series.
-Zach Ehrhard went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a walk and a run scored. He’s collected a hit in each of his last 14 games and is 24-for-55 (.436) with nine extra-base hits and 11 RBI during the stretch.
