PAPILLION, NEB. – The Omaha Storm Chasers (32-40/65-81) rolled to a 14-3 win over the Iowa Cubs (33-40/63-82) in the season finale on Sunday afternoon. Peyton Wilson homered from both sides of the plate and the Storm Chasers scored at least one run in 7 of their 8 offensive half-innings to power the double-digit victory.
Omaha opened the scoring, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st inning on an RBI groundout from Gavin Cross and RBI double from Carson Roccaforte to take a 2-0 lead. Roccaforte’s double was the team’s 288th of the year, setting a new club record.
Storm Chasers starter Lucas Braun (4-3) pitched a scoreless top of the 2nd inning and Omaha added 2 more runs in the bottom half with an RBI groundout from Colton Becker and single from Brett Squires to make it 4-0.
Braun came back with a scoreless top of the 3rd inning but gave up a 2-run home run in the top of the 4th inning to cut the Storm Chasers’ lead to 4-2.
Omaha added back to its lead in the bottom of the 4th inning behind an RBI single from Javier Vaz, then added 4 more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to bring the score to 9-2, courtesy of back-to-back home runs from Jacob Berry and Wilson, the first of which was a 3-run shot from Berry.
Braun finished the day going 5.0 innings and allowed just 2 runs while striking out 8 batters through the game, his most in a start with Omaha this season. James McArthur took the mound in his place to open the top of the 6th inning and navigated a one-out walk for a clean frame in his second Major League rehab outing of the week.
Roccaforte gave the Storm Chasers another run in the bottom of the 6th inning with an RBI single to make the score 10-2 and Connor Seabold followed with a scoreless frame in the top of the 7th inning.
Three more runs scored for Omaha in the bottom of the 7th inning when Matthew Lugo drove in a pair with a double and Cross sent another home with a single to put the Storm Chasers in front 13-2.
Iowa worked a run back in the top of the 8th inning with an RBI single off Matt Moore, but Omaha responded with another run in the bottom half with Wilson’s second home run of the game to make it 14-3. Wilson’s homer in the 5th came batting left-handed, while his long ball in the 8th came from the right side, becoming just the 2nd player in the Storm Chasers era (2011-present) of the Triple-A Omaha franchise to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game.
Carlos Duran took Moore’s place for the top of the 9th inning, and despite a pair of walks, he worked around the traffic for a scoreless inning to finish the 14-3 victory.
The Storm Chasers season came to an end with the victory, and Omaha will return to action next year back at Werner Park for the season opener against the Buffalo Bisons on Friday, March 26, 2027.
