JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (19-19; 52-52) dropped their fifth consecutive game as they lost to the Jupiter Hammerheads (15-23; 52-52) by a final score of 12-3 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
After a scoreless first inning, the Jupiter Hammerheads got on the scoreboard first off of Palm Beach starting pitcher Andrew Dutkanych IV (L, 3-2). After Luis Arana reached on an error by Dee Kennedy, who made his professional debut for Palm Beach, Edgardo De Leon hit an RBI double to put Jupiter ahead with one out. The next batter, Josh Hogue, followed with a two-run home run to right field to put the Hammerheads ahead by a 3-0 score. In the top of the third inning, Jupiter added another run on an RBI double by Yoffry Solano to increase the Jupiter lead to 4-0.
Dutkanych IV went just three innings in his start and allowed four runs in which three of those runs were earned. Alan Reyes came out of the Cardinals’ bullpen for his season debut for Palm Beach and held Jupiter scoreless through his first three innings in relief.
The Cardinals could not figure out Jupiter starting pitcher Jake Clemente who tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning against Jupiter relief pitcher Janero Miller (W, 1-0), Ryan Mitchell led off the frame with a single. Yairo Padilla followed Mitchell with a two-run home run to left field at 108.9 miles-per-hour, Padilla’s third home run of the season and first home run from the right side of the plate, to cut the deficit to 4-2 still in favor of the Hammerheads through six innings.
Joseph King made his fourth rehab appearance out of the Palm Beach bullpen and tossed a scoreless top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Palm Beach got a little closer. Cristofer Lebron led off with a single and Gabe Camacho hit a double for his first professional hit as part of his professional debut. After Trevor Haskins drew a walk to load the bases, Mitchell hit an RBI fielder’s choice to score Lebron. However, the Cardinals stranded two runners on base and managed to cut the deficit to 4-3 after seven innings.
Jupiter gave King trouble in the top of the eighth inning. The Hammerheads sent eight men to the plate, got four hits, and scored three runs and took a 7-3 lead to answer back on offense. In the top of the ninth inning, Anthony Watts came in and the Hammerheads took control of the game as they scored five runs highlighted by Hogue’s second home run of the game and Echedry Vargas’ three-run home run to give Jupiter a 12-3 lead. The Cardinals could not score an additional run and fell by the 12-3 final score on Thursday night.
