JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (33-32; 66-65), under the alternate identity ‘Frozen Iguanas,’ beat the Daytona Tortugas (37-27; 58-72) by a final score of 8-7 on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Palm Beach jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning against Daytona’s Dony Aguilera (L, 0-1). Matthew Miura and Gabe Camacho hit one-out singles and Jayden Lobliner blasted a three-run home run to left field to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
The Tortugas responded in the top of the third inning when Ichiro Cano hit an RBI single to center field to cut Palm Beach’s lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Cardinals loaded the bases. Miura drew a walk to drive in a run and Gabe Camacho blasted a two-run double off the center field fence, which gave Palm Beach a 6-1 lead.
Daytona responded to the three-run frame with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Drew Davies hit a sacrifice fly, Anielson Buten hit an RBI single and Cano drove in another with a single to make the score 6-4.
Palm Beach responded again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alexander Frias scored on a wild pitch, pushing their lead to 7-4.
The scoring slowed in the middle innings for both teams. Jesús García tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Palm Beach, bringing his week total to 5 1/3 shutout innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Drew Davies scored on a wild pitch to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 7-5.
However, Lobliner provided Palm Beach’s response with a solo home run to right field, his second blast of the night. It was his fourth home run of the year and first multi-home run game of his professional career.
Kaden Echeman (SV, 1) entered the game for the top of the ninth inning. Jirvin Morillo drove in a run with a single and Drew Davies hit an RBI double to put the tying run at third base.
Echeman threw a wild pitch, but Lobliner tracked down the ball and flipped it to Echeman, who was covering home plate, to throw the tying run out. The next hitter, Anielson Buten, struck out swinging to end the game and secure an 8-7 Cardinals win.
With this win, the Cardinals secured a series win over Daytona.
