Held to just two hits, the Chiefs never generated any offense in a 5-0 loss to the Lugnuts on Sunday afternoon at Jackson Field.
With the loss, Peoria dropped the series to Lansing, 5-2.
In the second, Bryan Arendt reached on a forceout before back-to-back doubles from Gunner Gouldsmith and Rodney Green Jr. brought home the first two runs of the game, giving Lansing a 2-0 lead.
Peoria starter Brian Holiday went 3.1 innings in his High-A debut, allowing three runs on five hits while walking two.
Lansing added another in the fourth on Gouldsmith’s solo homer to right field, extending its lead to 3-0. Two walks and a single later loaded the bases, but Christian Worley struck out Jake Reinisch to escape the jam.
Lugnuts starter Tucker Novotny was strong again in his second outing against the Chiefs this week, tossing five scoreless innings while he allowed two hits and two walks and struck out six.
In the seventh, Patrick Galle allowed a leadoff single to Jared Davis, who advanced to second on Galle’s errant pickoff attempt. Arendt doubled him home to extend Lansing’s lead to 4-0 before Green singled in Arendt later in the inning to make it 5-0.
Peoria did not record a baserunner after the fifth inning.
The Chiefs travel an hour west to face the West Michigan Whitecaps for the second series of their two-week road trip, starting Tuesday at 5:35 p.m. CT.
