RENO, Nev. – Finished with the second Silver State rivalry meeting of the season, the Reno Aces will now turn their attention to the Oklahoma City Comets, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, to begin their ninth series of the 2026 campaign.
It was a close set with the Las Vegas Aviators last week as each of the first four games were decided by three runs or less, but a six-run frame by Las Vegas in each of the weekend games swung the series in their favor.
There were four Aces that hit above the .300 mark, but none higher than Luis Urias as he batted .421 (8-for-19) with five runs scored, three doubles, one homer, five RBI and a 1.166 OPS. The next closest to Urías was Anderdson Rojas, who had seven hits in 19 trips (.368) and scored three times with a double and only one strikeout.
This upcoming series with Oklahoma City will be the first meeting of the two squads in 2026, one that Reno will be eager for as they have dropped two of the past three season series. While the Aces took eight of 12 games (.667) in 2024, it was Oklahoma City that has captured the victory in 2025 (5-7, .417) and 2023 (3-9, .250). That has helped the Comets hold a slim advantage since the start of the 2021 campaign, 29-25.
When looking further back, the series between the two has been tied at 35-35 since the start of 2016. However, Oklahoma City captured much of the success from the early part of this rivalry, as the Comets leads Reno in the all-time series, 44-54 (.449).
Of the 10 opponents that Reno has faced at least 50 times in franchise history, their 6.05 ERA (577 er, 857.2 ip) is the highest of those 10 (next: LV, 5.79) despite tossing their second-fewest innings of any of those opponents. While total numbers look lower due to fewer games compared to any of the other nine teams on the list, Reno’s 1.69 WHIP is their highest against any of those 10 opponents while their 1.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks ninth.
Meanwhile at the dish, Reno’s .270 (911-for-2268) batting average against Oklahoma City slots 10 of the 10 teams that the Aces have faced at least 50 times in franchise history. While Reno’s .353 on-base percentage is seventh of those 10, their .788 OPS is ninth while their 21.8 strikeout percentage is the worst against any opponent.
Oklahoma City enters the series at 24-20 (.545), which is third in the overall PCL at just 1.5 games out of first place behind the Sacramento River Cats. The Comets are 2.5 games up on Reno in a tie for fifth, though they have a game in hand after having their series finale against Salt Lake on May 10 cancelled.
It has been four straight wins for Oklahoma City, and they have scored double-digit runs in each of those four games. After dropping a 2-1 decision in game one and falling 8-2 in game two, the Comets flipped the script and pulled out wins by finals of 12-10, 17-1, 10-2, and 20-8.
With those scores, it should be no surprise that the Comets were the top offensive team in the PCL last week, batting .340 (82-for-241) which was nearly 20 points higher than the next closest squad (Las Vegas, .326). The batting average for last week was the fourth highest in all MiLB (first: ACL Giants Orange, .378), while their 1.013 OPS ranked sixth in the Minors.
Though not as dominant, it was still an impressive week for the Comets on the bump as they logged a 4.42 ERA (26 er, 53.0 ip), a mark that ranked third in the PCL last week. Though starters tossed the fewest amount of innings, they were nonetheless effective by logging the PCL’s third-best ERA of the week at 3.86 (10 er, 23.1 ip).
On an individual level, there were five players that hit at .400 or higher, plus another three that reached the .300 plateau. Overall, of the 12 batters to record at least one plate appearance, 10 of those 12 batters hit at a .270 clip or higher.
Tops among them was Chuckie Robinson, who batted .467 while scoring four times and driving in six runs with a 1.433 OPS. Alex Freeland had some of the most production, hitting .400 while scoring eight runs, crushing three homers, and driving in 11. Not far off from that was James Tibbs III, who batted .450 and drove in eight runs while scoring 10 times.
Overall there are six of the Dodgers’ top-30 prospects in Oklahoma City, none higher ranked than right-hander River Ryan who is No. 6 in the organization and No. 81 in all of MiLB. In three starts, he has yet to record a decision while posting a 4.09 ERA (5 er, 11.0 ip) and 14 strikeouts to three walks. Tops of their position players is Tibbs at No. 10 in the organization, who has been one of the best players on Oklahoma City this season and his hitting .314 in 43 games with 46 runs scored, 15 doubles, 11 homers, 335 RBI, and a.1038 OPS.
This week’s series will begin on Tuesday, May 19 from Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark beginning at 4:35 p.m. PT.
