SUGAR LAND, Tex. – The Reno Aces never looked back after first pitch on Tuesday, using a pair of multi-run innings early and dominant pitching to notch their sixth shutout win of the season with a 10-0 decision over the Sugar Land Space Cowboys.
From start to finish the Aces (27-30/59-73) were in control, scoring three times with their first set of swings behind a two-RBI double by Tyler Locklear and a Demetrio Crisantes RBI groundout. That groundout was the first out of the inning as each of the first five Aces that stepped to the plate reached base.
Reno’s biggest inning of the night was the third, plating six runs in the frame for just the 11th time this season. Tommy Troy, who is continuing his rehab assignment, started the frame in a big way by crushing his fourth Triple-A dinger of the season. Two batters later and Locklear joined him, reaching double-digit home runs with his 10th of the season to earn his third RBI of the night.
An error on a fielder’s choice allowed the frame to continue, and the Aces pounced on the Space Cowboys (36-22/68-64) by using a trio of two-out singles to generate the final three tallies from Anderdson Rojas, Kristian Robinson, and Troy. However, the inning came to an end when Troy was caught trying to advance on the throw after his knock.
For the second game in a row Pavin Smith left the yard, adding one final run to Reno’s total with his sixth homer of the year to lead off the seventh. Overall, it was the 12th time that Reno has hit at least three homers in a single game.
While the offense was dominating, so was the pitching staff as they combined to hold Sugar Land to just three hits in the contest. All three knocks were singles allowed by starter Ashton Izzi (1-3), one in the fourth and two at the start of the fifth, but both times worked out of danger.
By the end of six innings, Izzi had issued just one walk while striking out six, earning the first quality start of his Triple-A career. Even further, tonight also represented the first victory of his Triple-A career, moving his record to 1-3.
The bullpen for Reno was lock solid on the night, as the trio of Spencer Giesting, Kade Strowd, and Bryce Jarvis combined to not allow a hit with five strikeouts.
Tonight’s victory snapped what was a nine-game losing streak in Sugar Land against the Space Cowboys when including the postseason, as the Aces had dropped the 2024 finale at Constellation field on a walk off before then being swept in the 2024 playoffs. That streak ended with a six-game series sweep in Sugar Land in the 2025 campaign.
Even further, this was the sixth shutout win of the season for the Aces, bumping their record to even at 6-6 in such games. The last shutout win for Reno was not even a full week ago, as they defeated the River Cats by a 5-0 final in game three of their series on Aug. 27.
Eight of nine Aces to take an at-bat walked away with a hit, though Troy and Adrian Del Castillo led the way by going 3-for-5 each. The only difference between the two was Troy scored twice and drove in two thanks to his homer while Del Castillo doubled and scored once.
Having won four of the past five, the Aces will look to keep up the momentum when they battle the Space Cowboys in game two of their series on Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. PT.
