RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels shut out the Chesapeake Baysox, 1-0, on Friday night at CarMax Park.
The Flying Squirrels (74-60, 31-35 second half) snapped their season-high eight-game losing streak, holding the Baysox (66-68, 38-29) to four hits.
Richmond starter Jacob Bresnahan (Win, 1-1) threw seven innings and allowed four hits with seven strikeouts, the longest scoreless start of his professional career.
Bresnahan did not allow a baserunner to reach scoring position after the first inning, when Griff O’Ferrall was thrown out at home plate attempting to score on a flyout to right fielder Lisbel Diaz.
Mitch White stranded a two-out walk on base in the eighth. Tyler Vogel (Save, 16) added to his Eastern League saves lead with a scoreless ninth.
It was the 11th shutout win of the season for the Flying Squirrels, which is tied for the most in the Eastern League and tied for sixth-most in MiLB.
Gavin Kilen, activated from the injured list earlier in the day, broke a scoreless tie with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning against Baysox reliever Brandon Downer (Loss, 0-1).
Baysox starter JT Quinn threw five scoreless innings and held the Flying Squirrels to four hits.
Friday night’s game drew a crowd of 8,682 fans, bringing the Flying Squirrels’ season total to 460,734, which is 3,208 shy of matching the franchise’s single-season overall attendance record set in 2010. Richmond is closing in on leading Double-A in total and average attendance for the fifth consecutive season.
Vogel’s 16 saves are the fifth-most in a season in Flying Squirrels franchise history, one behind a tie for fourth with Heath Hembree (2011). He now has 22 saves in his Flying Squirrels career, moving him into a tie for fifth on the franchise’s all-time list with Josh Osich (2013-16) and Tyler Myrick (2023-25).
Sabin Ceballos walked twice on Friday night. He now has 72 walks this season, the second-most in a season in team history ahead of Diego Velasquez (70, 2025). Ceballos is eight walks behind Jacob Heyward’s franchise record of 80 (2019).
The series continues on Saturday night. Left-hander Greg Farone (5-11, 5.64) will start for Richmond opposed by Chesapeake right-hander Pat Reilly (0-2, 3.97). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Saturday is Childhood Cancer Awareness Night at CarMax Park. The Flying Squirrels will honor members of ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation and their families by wearing specialty jerseys each individually colored by ASK Kourageous Kids. ASK Kourageous Kids and their families will be invited onto the field for the Kourageous Kids lap at the end of the fifth inning.
