Series Preview: Holiday & island vibes will be high as Squirrels return to CarMax Park

Christmas in July & Parrot Head Night bookend weekend series

After nearly three weeks away, the Flying Squirrels return to CarMax Park for a stretch of nine games in 10 days. The team opens their extended stay at home with a three-game series against their division-rivals, the Erie Sea Wolves (Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), Friday, July 17-Sunday, July 19. The promo-packed weekend begins with a Christmas in July celebration, includes a special recognition of the Richmond 34 complete with postgame fireworks and ends with the ever-popular Aloha shirt giveaway as part of Parrot Head Night!

Friday, July 17 – Christmas in July, JMU Night & Fauxback Friday

Gates 5:30 p.m. | First pitch 7:05 p.m.

On-field fit: Red Fauxback jerseys, black pants and red and white Fauxback hats

Pregame entertainment: DJ Ron Manila and the Flying Squirrels' Batter Up Brass Band

Promotion highlights: Get in the holiday spirit with thoughts of cooler weather and join the Flying Squirrels celebrating Christmas in July at CarMax Park! Stroll through "snow" near the center field gates and enjoy classic holiday tunes performed by DJ Ron Manila and the Batter Up Brass Band along with plenty of holiday-themed FUNN throughout the game including a present-unwrapping competition, mini reindeer race, snowball toss and more. And watch out for the naughty or nice cam! Of course, Christmas in July wouldn't be complete without an appearance by Santa himself.

It's also JMU Night, so wear your purple and gold and represent the Dukes!

Saturday, July 18 – Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend, presented by Markel & In-Your-Face Fireworks

On-field fit: Gray Richmond 34 Legacy jerseys, black pants and black Blastoff hats

Pregame entertainment: DJ Cater Baldwin and the Flying Squirrels Drumline

Promotion highlights: The Flying Squirrels will honor the legacy of the Richmond 34 and the new monument at CarMax Park that pays tribute to the group of 34 Virginia Union University students who were arrested as part of a non-violent sit-in protest during the Civil Rights Movement in 1960. Guests will have the opportunity to hear from the public artists involved in the CarMax Park project and members of the Richmond 34 themselves as part of the pregame festivities. The Flying Squirrels will also present the Richmond 34 Legacy Scholarship to two incoming freshmen at Virginia Union and Virginia State Universities.

The team will wear Negro League-inspired jerseys that will be auctioned during the game to benefit the Richmond 34 Legacy Scholarship Fund. Click here to bid on game-worn jerseys.

The evening will conclude with postgame In-Your-Face Fireworks, presented by Chick-fil-A!

Sunday, July 19 – Summer Music Series: Parrot Head Night & Aloha Shirt Giveaway, presented by Dominion Energy

Pregame entertainment: Buffett cover band Dreamsicle 

Promotion highlights: One of the Flying Squirrels' most popular giveaways each year, the first 2,000 guest ages 15 and older will get a Squirrels-branded Aloha shirt (sizes small-2XL, whilte supplies last). Arrive early to grab your Aloha shirt and then get those fins up for a live performance by Buffett cover band Dreamsicle near The Patio. 

Get autographs from Flying Squirrels players as part of Signature Sunday from 3:45-4:15 p.m. in The Backstop and stick around after the game for Catch on the Field.
