RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels closed their regular season with a 3-1 loss to the Chesapeake Baysox on Sunday afternoon at CarMax Park.
The Flying Squirrels (74-61, 31-36 second half) finished the season with the Eastern League’s second-best overall record but dropped four-of-five in the series against the Baysox (67-68, 38-29).
Wehiwa Aloy hit a two-out, three-run homer against Flying Squirrels reliever Dale Stanavich (Loss, 3-4) in the top of the eighth to give the Baysox a 3-1 lead.
Richmond brought the tying run to the batter’s box in the ninth, but Baysox reliever Brock Moore (Save, 2) worked a double-play groundout to end the game.
The Flying Squirrels opened a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single by Sabin Ceballos.
Richmond starter Greg Farone threw three scoreless innings. Shane Rademacher took over in the fourth and worked two scoreless frames.
Baysox relievers Richard Guasch, Keagan Gillies (Win, 1-0), Alex Pham and Moore held the Flying Squirrels scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.
The Flying Squirrels open the Southwest Division Series on the road against the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at UPMC Park in Erie, Pa.
