The Major League Baseball Postseason gets started today with the first four games in the best-of-three Wild Card Series. Three alumni of the Richmond Flying Squirrels have been selected to Postseason rosters for teams starting their playoff journey today.
Erik Miller is part of the Boston Red Sox bullpen. Heliot Ramos is one of the outfielders for the New York Yankees. Tristan Peters is playing with the Chicago White Sox.
Miller was a member of the Flying Squirrels bullpen to begin the 2023 season shortly after being traded from the Philadelphia Phillies to the San Francisco Giants.
He pitched six games for Richmond that year, posting a 0.87 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 10.1 innings. Miller made his MLB debut with the Giants the following spring.
At this year’s trade deadline, Miller joined the Red Sox along with High-A outfielder Carlos Guiterrez in a deal for infielder Marcelo Meyer. Between the Giants and the Red Sox this year, Miller went 4-2 with a 2.98 ERA in 57 outings, adding five saves. The Red Sox face the Yankees in the Wild Card round.
Ramos was also moved at this year’s trade deadline, joining the Yankees in a deal from the Giants for left-handed pitcher Henry Lalane and infielder Kaeden Kent, who joined the Flying Squirrels for the Eastern League postseason.
At 19 years old in 2019, Ramos became the first teenager to ever play for the Flying Squirrels when he was called up from High-A San Jose that August, batting .242 with three homers and 15 RBIs over 25 games. He returned to begin the 2021 season and hit 10 homers over 62 games before heading to Triple-A. He made his MLB debut with the Giants in 2022 and spent parts of five seasons in San Francisco, earning a National League All-Star selection in 2024.
This year, Ramos hit .245 with 13 homers and 46 RBIs over 112 games between the Giants and Yankees. Over his final 15 games of the regular season in New York, he hit .286 with three homers.
Peters joined the Flying Squirrels in 2022 after being traded at the deadline from the Brewers for Trevor Rosenthal. He played 34 games with Richmond through the end of the season.
That November, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for Brett Wisely. He made his MLB debut with the Rays last August before being designated for assignment and traded to the White Sox in December.
This year, Peters had a breakout season in Chicago and was selected as an American League All-Star. The day before his selection was announced, he hit for the cycle against the Athletics. He was also the AL Rookie of the Month in August. Overall this year, he hit .265 in 156 games with 12 homers and 56 RBIs.
Seven other Flying Squirrels players appeared in games this year for teams playing in the Wild Card round. Bryce Johnson (2019 Flying Squirrels) was with the San Diego Padres and finished the year in the minors. Raymond Burgos (2023, 2025) was with the Red Sox for nine appearances.
Steven Okert (2014) went 6-2 with a 2.13 ERA over 69 outings for the Houston Astros this year, including working part of a combined no-hitter in May, but he was placed on the injured list earlier this month with a hamstring strain. Kai-Wei Teng (2022-2023) made 30 appearances, including 10 starts, for the Astros but was optioned to the minors earlier this month.
Caleb Kilian (2021) was traded to the Phillies from the Giants in August but was placed on the injured list with an oblique strain after four outings. Ty Blach (2014) pitched for the Chicago Cubs this year but was later released.
Joey Bart (2019) appeared in games this year with the playoff-bound Braves and White Sox, but he suffered a hand fracture in August with Chicago and missed the rest of the season.
