RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels were eliminated from the Eastern League playoffs with a 5-3 loss to the Erie SeaWolves in Game 2 of the Southwest Division Series on Thursday night at CarMax Park.
The Flying Squirrels (0-2) were swept by the SeaWolves (2-0) in the Division Series for the third time in the last five years. Erie clinched its fifth consecutive Southwest Division crown.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Flying Squirrels opened the scoring with a three-run homer by Kaeden Kent, playing his first game at CarMax Park.
Erie starter Kenny Serwa (Win, 1-0) held the Flying Squirrels scoreless the rest his outing, finishing with three runs allowed over seven innings.
The SeaWolves tied the score, 3-3, with a three-run homer by Thayron Liranzo in the bottom of the sixth against Jacob Bresnahan (Loss, 0-1). Later in the inning, Chris Meyers scored on a passed ball to move Erie ahead.
Seth Stephen scored on a sacrifice fly by Zyhir Hope in the seventh to open a 5-3 Erie lead.
The Flying Squirrels put two runners on base in the ninth inning against Moises Rodriguez (Save, 1) but were held scoreless to end the game.
Jackson Flora started for Richmond and struck out four batters, including all three batters in the first inning, over his two perfect frames.
Bresnahan held Erie scoreless through his first three innings until the seventh and finished his outing with six strikeouts.
Tyler Vogel struck out two over two scoreless relief innings.
