BOWIE, Md. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels surrendered a pair of three-run innings to the Chesapeake Baysox and lost, 7-2, on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium.
The Flying Squirrels (66-47, 23-22 second) led early but fell behind in the fourth against the Baysox (55-58, 26-19) and never recovered.
Lisbel Diaz, making his Double-A debut, led off the second with a single and later scored on a double steal to give the Flying Squirrels a 1-0 lead.
The double steal gave the Flying Squirrels 170 stolen bases this year, a new single-season franchise record. It passed the previous record of 168 in 2014.
The Baysox tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the third with a run scoring on a double-play groundout.
In the bottom of the fourth, Griff O’Ferrall and Vance Honeycutt hit back-to-back RBI singles and a run scored on a wild pitch by Greg Farone (Loss, 5-10) to give the Baysox a 4-1 lead.
Chesapeake starter Caden Hunter (Win, 2-2) allowed one run over five innings with two strikeouts.
In the top of the sixth, Charlie Szykowny hit a solo homer, his 13th of the season, to close the deficit to 4-2.
The Baysox added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to open a 7-2 lead. Colin Tuft hit an RBI single and Wehiwa Aloy followed with a two-run homer.
Logan Martin worked a scoreless sixth out of the Richmond bullpen. Jack Choate struck out three batters in the seventh to work around a two-out walk.
The series continues Wednesday night. Right-hander Trystan Vrieling (5-2, 4.34) will start for Richmond opposed by Chesapeake left-hander Joseph Dzierwa (3-1, 1.89). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium.
