Looking to win two straight, the Rochester Red Wings (22-19, 68-47) dropped their Thursday matinee against the Charlotte Knights (22-20, 64-53), 7-2. The Red Wings offense was held to just five hits, including a homer off the bat of C Riley Adams and a double from 2B Cayden Wallace.

The Knights got off to a hot start in the top half of the first as RF Rikku Nishida hit a bunt single up the first base line. Nishida then stole second during a strikeout before advancing to third on an error. Nishida later scored on a single from DH Tim Elko, giving Charlotte an early 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless first, 3B Trey Lipscomb singled to center in the second, moved to second on a groundout before scoring on a single from CF Sam Petersen, tying the game at one apiece.
In the top of the fourth, Tim Elko and C Michael Turner opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Former Red Wing CF Joey Wiemer then doubled to right-center, moving Turner to third and scoring Elko as the Knights took a 2-1 lead. Turner later scored on a groundout, with Wiemer advancing to third, extending Charlotte's lead to 3-1. LF Caden Connor followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing in Wiemer and giving the Knights a 4-1 advantage.
Things continued to roll for the Knights in the top of the fifth as SS Jason Mathews and Rikku Nishida drew back-to-back walks before Tim Elko hit a three-run home run, making it 7-1 Charlotte.
After being held scoreless for six straight innings, the Red Wings finally broke through in the top of the ninth with Riley Adams launching a home run to make it 7-2 Charlotte. Sam Petersen then drew a walk before a flyout and back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
LHP Carson Palmquist got the start for Rochester, pitching 2.0 innings with two hits, three strikeouts, one run, and one walk. RHP Connor Van Scoyoc followed Palmquist, pitching 2.2 innings with five hits, two walks, and five runs allowed. RHP Riley Cornelio came on for Van Scoyoc, pitching 2.0 innings with four strikeouts and one walk. LHP Matt Krook took the mound after Cornelio, pitching 1.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout. RHP Jack Sinclair came on for Krook, pitching 1.0 inning with one walk and one strikeout.
The Rochester Red Wings Player of the Game today is RHP Riley Cornelio. The former TCU Horned Frog turned in 2.0 hitless innings in relief, with four strikeouts and one walk. He now leads Rochester with 88 strikeouts in 57.1 innings this season. His 13.81 K/9 leads all Triple-A pitchers with at least 50.0 innings pitched.
Rochester will play game four of the series against the Knights on Friday at 6:45 p.m., as they look to bounce back. RHP Chandler Champlain is expected to start for Rochester against LHP Noah Schultz for Charlotte.
