PAPILLION, NE (September 2, 2026) - Just once this season had the St. Paul Saints come back to win a game when trailing entering the ninth. That was at home against the Omaha Storm Chasers on June 19. They’ve now done it on the road against that same team. Trailing by a run in the ninth, the Saints tied it and plated two in the 10th for a come from behind 9-7 win on Wednesday afternoon at Werner Park.
The Saints had 22 base runners on the day, 10 hits, 11 walks, and an error. They utilized all three over the final two innings to get the win. Down 7-6 in the ninth, the Saints tied it as they loaded the bases on a leadoff walk to Roden, a one out walk to Mendez, and an infield single from Morissette. Tanner Schobel tied it with a sacrifice fly to left knotting the game at seven.
With Rucker the placed runner at second in the 10th, Ian Daugherty dropped down a sacrifice bunt and reached when pitcher Matt Moore’s throw to first pulled second baseman Peyton Wilson off the bag. Emmanuel Rodriguez followed with a walk, his career-high fourth, loading the bases. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Kala’i Rosario came through with a two-run single to left giving the Saints a 9-7 lead. Rosario went 2-6 with three RBI.
In the bottom of the inning Julian Merryweather slammed the door shut by striking out Colton Becker, getting Omar Hernandez to pop out, and getting Gavin Cross to line out to first. Merryweather picked up his sixth save of the season. It capped off a fantastic final five innings by the Saints bullpen as Eric Orze, Marco Raya, and Merryweather retired the final 15 men they faced and combined to go 5.1 shutout innings allowing one hit and striking out six.
Rodriguez started the game with a walk and with one out scored on an Alan Roden double to right-center giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Roden then took off for third before pitcher Ryan Ramsey delivered. Ramsey stepped off, spun and threw to second, while Roden was chugging to third. Upon catching the throw, second baseman Peyton Wilson’s throw hit off Roden and went into foul territory allowing him to score increasing the lead to 2-0.
The lead didn’t last long as Cross led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to right-center, his 16th of the season, cutting the lead to 2-1. Abraham Toro followed with a walk and, with one out, Brett Squired delivered a two-run homer to right-center, his first of the game and 23rd of the season, giving the Storm Chasers a 3-2 lead.
Squires connected for his second of the game with a leadoff homer in the third, his 24th of the season, putting the Storm Chasers up 4-2.
For the first time in his career Cody Morissette homered in his third straight game as he tied the game in the fourth. Hendry Mendez led off with a single to center and Morissette unloaded on one over the right field wall, his 14th of the season, 13th with the Saints, tying the game at four.
As was the case in the first, the Storm Chasers answered in the bottom of the inning. Cross led off with an infield single to second and Toro walked. After a double steal, Cross scored on a wild pitch giving the Storm Chasers a 5-4 lead.
After the Saints failed to score with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the fifth, the Storm Chasers took that momentum to the bottom half and plated a pair. Jacob Berry led off the inning with a solo homer to right, his ninth of the season and fifth with the Storm Chasers, putting the Storm Chasers up 6-4. Colton Becker followed with a walk and he moved to third on a single by Hernandez. With two outs Toro singled to right scoring Becker upping the lead to 7-4.
The Saints answered in the sixth when Rucker hit a solo homer to left, his first with the Saints, making it 7-5. With two outs the top of the order loaded the bases as Rodriguez walked, Aaron Sabato singled to left, and Roden walked. Rosario banged an RBI single into left, but Sabato was cut down trying to score as the Saints got to within 7-6. That out at the plate didn’t cost the Saints as they got a second chance in the 10th inning and this time the second run scored.
The same two teams meet in game three of a six-game series on Thursday night at Werner Park at 6:35 p.m. The Saints send RHP Germán Márquez (1-2, 4.89) to the mound against Storm Chasers RHP Henry Williams (4-4, 5.96). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
