STOCKTON, Calif. — The Ports (20-15, 47–55) dropped the series finale, and the series overall, in a 5-3 loss to Lake Elsinore. The Storm’s early lead was too much for the Stockton offense to overcome.
Conner Westenburg singled into left on the first pitch of the game, got to second on a balk, and advanced to third on his 43rd stolen base of the season. He would eventually come in to score on an RBI groundout to make it 1-0 for the Storm (14-21, 54-48).
Stockton missed their first opportunity to answer in the bottom of the second with two on and nobody out, but a strikeout and fielder’s choice at the plate ended the chance.
Westenburg scored on another ground ball, this time beating a throw to the plate on what went down as an RBI fielder’s choice for Ty Harvey. A Bradley Frye sacrifice fly and Truitt Madonna RBI single added to the Lake Elsinore lead in the third, making it 4-0. A Dylan Grego RBI single an inning later gave the Storm a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
The Ports scored three in the bottom of the fourth to begin their comeback efforts, a Michael Brooks sacrifice fly scored the first, then Ramon Landaeta singled one in, and Max Durrington beat out a potential double play ball to score a third. The fourth-inning rally cut the Storm lead to 5-3.
Stockton had a chance with runners in scoring position in the seventh, but couldn’t capitalize, and the score would hold 5-3 for the remainder of the series finale.
UP NEXT: The Ports will begin a six-game series in San Jose this Tuesday, with the Ports and Giants tied for second in the Cal League North second half standings right behind the first place first place Fresno Grizzlies.
