SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Ports (17-11, 44-50) tied their season high in runs with 16 and reached a season-high, five-game win streak in a 16-3 thumping of the 66ers (11-17, 39-55) to claim the series with two more to play at San Manuel Stadium.
A two-RBI triple (6) for Breyson Guedez got the scoring started for Stockton to make it 2-0 in the second. The Ports got another run after singles from Nate Nankil and Edgar Montero were followed by a steal of second (5) for Montero with a throwing error by the catcher to make it 3-0. Inland Empire got a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1 after a single, an errant pickoff attempt by starter Donny Troconis, and a sac fly. But that’s all Troconis would allow in his four innings of work.
Stockton broke through in the fifth inning with six runs, as they started to capitalize on Inland Empire’s wildness over the next two frames. An RBI single by for Montero along with a wild pitch put the Ports up 5-1. A bases-loaded walk for Michael Brooks plated another run, followed by another wild pitch, and a two-RBI single from Bryan Andrade to put Stockton up 9-1.
Seven more runs in the sixth inning broke the game open for Stockton. Four walks, two hit by pitches, a Guedez RBI single, and an RBI groundout extended the Ports lead to 12-1. The scoring was capped off by a grand slam (14) by Bobby Blandford to give Stockton a 16-1 advantage.
Inland Empire scratched across a couple of runs in the eighth against Josnier Parra, but by then the Ports had done too much damage for it to matter.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Michael Brooks walked a career-high five times on the night. Guedez came up a home run short of the Ports first cycle since 2012.
UP NEXT: Game five is scheduled for a 6:35 PM first pitch, with RHP Jose Romero (2-7, 6.38) starting for Inland Empire versus LHP Jackson Phipps (3-2, 6.78) for Stockton.
