STOCKTON, Calif. – The Cheladas (27-21, 54-60) take the series finale 7-2 led by Josiah Romeo’s shutdown start over Visalia. Stockton wins the series 4-2 to stay in first place in the California League North.
The Cheladas scored first on Gavin Turley’s RBI double (6) to left center field. Max Durrington scored giving Stockton the early 1-0 lead. Bryan Andrade connected with a hanging breaking ball for a solo home run (10) to left center field in the second, making it 2-0.
Romeo pitched seven shutout innings allowing just two hits with four strikeouts, including a big strikeout to escape with a runner in scoring position in the seventh. It was a career-high seven innings of work for Romeo. The offense took the baton from their starter in the bottom of the seventh, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs. The outburst was highlighted by a Roman Martin RBI double (3), Edgar Montero RBI single on a 106-mph line drive, and Durrington scoring for a second time making it 6-2.
Visalia (18-30, 46-68) answered in the top of the eighth on a two-run base hit from Paul Schoenfeld to make it 6-2. A sacrifice fly would have added another, but Durrington delivered a bullet from left field to nab the Rawhide runner at the plate and keep it 6-2.
Durrington scored for a third time on another Turley base-hit to make it 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Kade Brown would enter in the ninth to face the minimum and strike out two, clinching the game and series win for Stockton.
