STOCKTON, Calif. – The Ports (20-15, 47-54) responded emphatically to their 10-run loss last night with a 10-1 thumping of the Storm (14-21, 53-48) on Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark. The win guarantees a season-series win over Lake Elsinore for Stockton and sets up an opportunity to split this six-game series on Sunday.
Starter Jackson Phipps took a no hitter into the seventh, before surrendering a two-out single through the left side to Yoiber Ocopio on his career-high 87th pitch of the night. It was Phipps’ longest outing of the season and the second time this year he threw at least five no-hit innings against the Storm.
His offense went ahead 1-0 in the third on a Breyson Guedez double (26) to score Shotaro Morii. Stockton broke through in the fourth with six runs to take a firm grip on the game. The first of four walks on the night for Bobby Blandford started the frame and was followed by a towering, 422-foot home run for Edgar Montero (8) to right center put the Ports up 3-0. Nate Nankil immediately followed that with a 335-foot home run (1) of his own into the Black Oak Casino Back Porch for a 4-0 Stockton advantage.
A double for Ramon Landaeta (4) into the left field corner was followed by Morii being hit on the foot by a pitch and a single for Max Durrington. A wild pitch scored Landaeta, a Guedez single plated Morii, and another wild pitch scored Durrington to put the home team in front 7-0.
Another hit followed the single that broke up the no hitter to get the Storm on the board in the seventh, but an RBI triple (2) for Shotaro Morii followed a double (11) for Montero to give the Ports their seven-run lead back at 8-1. An RBI single for Gavin Turley and a double for Nankil (4) scored two more in the eighth for the 10-1 Stockton lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Stockton is now in second place by themselves in the Cal League North second half standings, leading San Jose by one game and trailing Fresno by one. The Ports racked up five doubles in the game, tying the season-high five they hit against the Storm on July 3.
Max Durrington registered his fifth three-hit game of the season and Guedez had his 10th of the year. Guedez is second in the league with his 26 doubles.
UP NEXT: The series finale is scheduled for a 5:00 PM first pitch with RHP Luis Maracara (2-2, 8.12) starting for the Storm and RHP Josiah Romeo (6-3, 6.59) looks to continue his strong stretch for the Ports.
