RHP Mike Burrows tossed 4.2 scoreless innings in his second major league rehab appearance as the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (33-15, 65-57) held on for a 3-2 victory over the Oklahoma City Comets (27-20, 68-53) on Thursday night at Constellation Field.
Burrows kept the Comets off the board through his 4.2 innings of work, taking a no-hitter into the fifth, giving up just three base runners on a pair of walks and a hit batter in his first four frames of work. Oklahoma City broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the fifth before Hyeseong Kim stole second and moved into scoring position. Burrows responded with a strikeout and a fly out before RHP Alimber Santa entered and struck out the lone batter he faced to strand the runner and keep the Comets scoreless.
Zach Cole put an end Oklahoma City’s no-hitter with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, but a strikeout ended the inning and left Cole stranded at first.
The Space Cowboys broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth. César Salazar singled to lead off the inning before Pascanel Ferreras doubled to center field to bring home Salazar and give Sugar Land a 1-0 lead. Cavan Biggio followed with a walk before Zach Dezenzo was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Trenton Brooks then hit a chopper that went under the glove of the second baseman, bringing home two runs to extend the Sugar Land lead to 3-0.
RHP Brandon McPherson entered in the sixth and kept the Comets scoreless until the ninth. McPherson tossed 3.2 innings, allowing two hits while walking two and striking out two. Oklahoma City cut into the Sugar Land lead with two outs in the ninth when Alek Thomas connected on a two-run inside-the-park home run to make it a 3-2 game.
RHP Roddery Muñoz (S, 11) was summoned from the bullpen and struck out the only batter he faced to earn his 11th save and close out the victory for the Space Cowboys.
