WEST SACRAMENTO (August 18, 2026) — In a back-and-forth battle on Tuesday night at Sutter Health Park, the Sacramento River Cats (27-19/69-49) defeated the Tacoma Rainiers (21-25/54-67) by a final score of 9-5 in the series opener. Tacoma erased a four-run deficit in the top of the fourth inning, but the River Cats scored four unanswered runs to take game one of the series. Victor Labrada and Nick Raposo each tallied multi-hit efforts, while Connor Joe and Lazaro Montes each extended their on-base streaks to 16 and 17 games, respectively, in the loss.
The River Cats took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Marcelo Mayer, playing on a Major League rehab assignment, worked a leadoff walk and went first-to-third on a one-out single from Parks Harber. With runners on the corners and out out, Harber took off from first base as Bo Davidson drew a walk, but Raposo’s throw went into center field, allowing Mayer to score, making it 1-0.
The Rainiers leveled the score in the top of the second inning. After Seth Lonsway retired the leadoff batter, Joe connected on a double, extending his on-base streak to 16 games. An infield single for Victor Labrada pushed Joe up to third, and Raposo poked a double to the right field corner, plating Joe to knot the game at one.
Sacramento went back in front in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff walk to Harber, Grant McCray singled back up the middle, pushing Harber to third. Shay Whitcomb drove in Sacramento’s second run on a sacrifice fly to deep center field to make it 2-1. Will Brennan (5) added on with a two-run home run to right-center field, extending the River Cats lead to 4-1. The next three Sacramento hitters singled, the final of which came from Mayer, drove in a run to give the River Cats a 5-1 advantage after three innings.
The Rainiers rallied with four runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game. The bottom third of the order sparked the rally, as the first three batters of the frame all hit singles: Labrada, Raposo and Miles Mastrobuoni, who drove in a run to make it 5-2. With one out in the inning, Michael Arroyo picked up his first hit of the night, loading the bases with a single. Andy Ibáñez, in his Rainiers debut, hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Raposo and get the Rainiers within 5-3. Lonsway issued back-to-back walks to Patrick Wisdom and Montes to force in another run and cut Tacoma’s deficit to one at 5-4, knocking the River Cats starter from the game. Wilkin Ramos took over in relief, and hit Joe with a pitch to force in the tying run, evening the game at five apiece.
Walks came back to hurt Tacoma in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner at first and two outs, Whitcomb singled, followed by back-to-back walks from Gunner Mayer. The second was issued to Nate Furman with the bases loaded, putting the River Cats back on top, 6-5.
Carlos Vargas made the third appearance of Major League rehab assignment with Tacoma in the fifth inning, striking out the side on 16 pitches to keep it a one-run game.
Sacramento padded its lead in the sixth inning. Reid VanScoter recorded the first out of the inning, but three straight River Cats reached base as Grant McCray walked, Whitcomb singled and Brennan walked. Nate Furman bounced into a fielder’s choice on an attempted double play, but Mastrobuoni’s throw to first got by Joe, allowing a pair of runs to score, and pushing the River Cats lead to 8-5.
Bo Davidson tacked on another River Cats run in the seventh inning. With one out, Domingo González hit Harber with a pitch and gave up a double to Davidson down the right field line to make it a 9-5 game.
Troy Watson made his Rainiers debut in the bottom of the eighth inning, working around a one-out double to throw a scoreless frame.
In the top of the ninth inning, Eric Cerantola issued a two-out walk to Victor Labrada, retiring the other three Tacoma batters to close out the game, as the Rainiers dropped the series opener, 9-5. Tacoma will aim to bounce back on Wednesday, with LHP Jhonathan Díaz slated to get the start. First pitch is set for 6:45 PM.
