EUGENE – The visitors gave themselves opportunities with runners in scoring position in seven of their nine at-bats Wednesday night, but the Tri-City Dust Devils (14-18 2H, 49-49) were held in check by the Eugene Emeralds (18-14 2H, 60-38) in a 4-0 win for the home side at PK Park.
Starter Yeferson Vargas (3-8) gave his team a quality start, going six innings and giving up just two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking only two. Both runs off Vargas came in his final inning of work, shutting out Eugene for the first five frames.
The Emeralds retired Tri-City in order only once on the night, in the top of the 6th inning, and stranded a runner at first base (C Peter Burns, who had walked with two outs) in the 2nd. In every other inning the Dust Devils had at least one runner at second and, in four of those innings, got a runner safely to third. The big hit eluded the visitors, though, with the club going 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The lone hit came in the top of the 9th, with DH Matt Coutney held up at third after a ground ball single got quickly enough to right field off the bat of CF Gage Harrelson.
Each team received strong relief performances out of the bullpen. Lefty Dylan Phillips got the final four outs for Tri-City, striking out three, and righty Alix Hernandez (1-0) threw three scoreless innings in his High-A debut.
DUST DEVILS NOTES
-3B Harold Coll went 0-for-4 for the game, bringing to an end a 26-game on-base streak that stands as the longest by a Dust Devil in 2026. 1B Ryan Nicholson, who saw a 10-game hit streak end Tuesday night, doubled in the 8th inning to push his now on-base streak to 12 games.
-Tri-City laid down two successful sacrifice bunts Wednesday night, pushing their season total to 32. The team leads the Northwest League by a substantial margin (Spokane has 15, the next closest) and sits in second place in all of High-A ball. The Quad Cities River Bandits, affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, have 41 for the season.
-In the Northwest League on Wednesday the Everett AquaSox rallied with seven runs in their final two at-bats to stun the Hillsboro Hops 9-8 at Hops Ballpark. The win kept Everett in first place and put the Dust Devils five games back nearing the midway point of the Second Half. The Vancouver Canadians held off the Spokane Indians 5-3 at Rogers Field at Nat Bailey Stadium, winning their second straight of the week.

Tri-City and Eugene collide in game three of their six-game series at 6:35 p.m. Thursday night at PK Park. Right-hander Peyton Olejnik (4-6, 4.48 ERA) takes the hill for the Dust Devils, countered by southpaw Jacob Bresnahan (4-2, 3.10 ERA) of the Emeralds.
