Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa Drillers closed out the home portion of the 2026 regular season on Sunday evening, and for much of the night it looked like they would conclude things with another victory. But, Wichita had other ideas, scoring the final eight runs of the game to stage a comeback that handed the Drillers a 13-7 loss in ten innings at ONEOK Field.
The defeat kept the Drillers from recording their second six-game sweep of the year, concluding the series with a 5-1 record.
For the season, they had a 45-24 home record, the best home mark in franchise history.
Early, the game looked likely to be a pitcher’s duel. Tulsa starting pitcher Ryan Fox retired all six batters he faced, needing just 23 pitches to work through two perfect innings, while Wichita starter Adrian Bohorquez, who entered the game with a 1.00 Double-A ERA, matched him with two scoreless innings.
Roque Gutierrez replaced Fox to open the third inning and needed 34 pitches to get through the top of the third. Wichita got two hits and took advantage of two walks to score a pair of runs to open the game’s scoring.
It was just the start of the scoring as the Drillers put up three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. The first three batters in the inning reached safely on an error, a hit by pitch and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Kole Myers brought home one run when he grounded out. Jake Gelof followed with a run-scoring single that tied the game before a two-out wild pitch gave the Drillers their third run.
Wichita went back in front with a three-run fourth. All three runs scored on five straight one-out hits that produced a 5-3 lead for the Wind Surge.
The Drillers got plenty of help from the Wind Surge in scoring four more runs in the bottom half of the fourth. The inning included just three hits but was aided by four errors. A two-run single from Taylor Young tied the score, before a single from Josue De Paula accounted for the third run of the frame.
After De Paula stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error, he came home on a sacrifice fly from Griffin Lockwood-Powell that put Tulsa in front 7-5.
Brown’s solo homer in the sixth inning pulled the Wind Surge back to within one run.
It remained a one-run Tulsa lead until the ninth inning. Lucas Wepf came on in search of his fourth save, but it was not to be. Two singles and walk loaded the bases with no outs before Wepf threw a wild pitch that allowed Wichita to tie the score.
Wepf escaped with just one run allowed and the Drillers did not score in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.
Things unraveled for Tulsa in the top of the tenth. Reliever Cam Day struck out the leadoff batter before a walk, a double steal and a two-run single put Wichita in front. It opened the door for a six-run inning from the Wind Surge that gave them a 13-7 lead.
The Drillers loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth, but did not score.
GAME NOTES
*De Paula’s fourth-inning steal was his 30th stolen base of the year. The outfielder still has an outside shot of a 30-30 season as he currently has 26 home runs with six games remaining in the regular season.
*Jake Gelof did not homer, leaving him with 32 on the season, one behind the Tulsa professional baseball record of 33 home runs hit by Tim Wheeler in 2011. Gelof was 1-3 in the game with one RBI, moving him closer to a 100-RBI season. He now has 94 heading into the final series of the regular season.
*Four of Tulsa’s seven runs were unearned due to five errors from the Wind Surge.
*Fox delivered his best outing since returning from a three-month stint on the Injured List. Three of the six outs he recorded in his two perfect innings came on strikeouts.
*Reliever Jacob Kmatz matched Fox by blanking the Wind Surge in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing two hits and zero walks while striking out four.
*Tulsa had wrapped up a victory in the Coors Light Propeller Series between the two teams earlier in the season. The Drillers finished with a 19-5 record against the Wind Surge on the season.
UP NEXT
The Drillers will have an off day on Monday before opening their final regular season road series on Tuesday evening in Northwest Arkansas. They will face the Naturals in a six-game series at Arvest Ballpark with Tuesday’s series opener set to begin at 7:05 p.m. Pitching plans for the series have yet to be released by either team.
It was the final regular season game at ONEOK Field, but it was not the final game of 2026. Tulsa will meet Springfield in the Texas League’s North Division Playoff Series. It will be a best-of-three series between the two teams with games 2 and 3 scheduled to be played in Tulsa on Thursday, September 17 and Friday, September 18.
