EVERETT, WA – The Canadians secured an elusive series win with a 9-3 victory over the Everett AquaSox (SEA) Sunday that featured a five-run eighth and a stout showing from the bullpen. It’s the first time since mid-April that the C’s have won a six-game series.
For the second consecutive day, the Canadians used the long ball in the first inning to grab an early lead. This time it was Ty Southisene, who hammered the first pitch of the game for a solo shot. It was his first pro homer since he was drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round two years ago.
Everett would get to #6 Blue Jays prospect Dasan Hill for two runs on one hit and two walks in the first, but the recently acquired lefty finished his two-inning outing by retiring the final four batters he faced.
On came Holden Wilkerson (W, 6-7) to begin the third with the C’s trailing 2-1. He put up a zero in that inning before Vancouver rallied for two runs in the fourth on a two-run double from #29 Blue Jays prospect Edward Duran.
Wilkerson would navigate a tricky spot in the home half of that inning to keep the Canadians in front. With runners at the corners and nobody out, the righty got a pop up on the infield and an inning-ending double play to keep Vancouver’s 3-2 advantage intact.
Peyton Williams uncorked his fourth homer of the series and 11th of the season with two outs in the fifth to pad the lead then Wilkerson stranded runners at the corners with back-to-back outs that kept the score 4-2.
A run in the bottom of the seventh brought the ‘Sox within one, but Wilkerson wrapped up his outing with another inning-ending double play to preserve the lead. His final line: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 5 K.
Five more runs would score in the top of the eighth to ice the game. The frame featured three walks, a run-scoring fielder’s choice, a bases loaded hit by pitch, a two-run double off the bat of Jake Casey and an RBI groundout from Williams to run Vancouver’s lead to six.
Carson Myers handled the final six outs, and the Canadians won their fourth of six games this week by a final score of 9-3.
With the win, the C’s are now alone in second place and 1.5 games back of first. After an off day tomorrow, Vancouver returns home to take on Tri-City (LAA) Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. on Bally Sports Live, MiLB TV, the MiLB App and the C’s Broadcast Network.
