EVERETT, WA – A determined rally in the top of the ninth brought the Canadians just shy of a comeback win over the Everett AquaSox (SEA) Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium. The tying run made it to third in the final frame, but the Frogs held on to beat the C’s 4-3.
Down by three after eight, Peyton Williams uncorked a 416-foot blast on the first pitch of the ninth to go deep for the second time on the night. Ryan Sprock singled to extend his on base streak to 14 games and Gable Mitchell doubled in the next two at-bats to put the tying runs in scoring position, but a missed call by the umpires on what should have been a foul ball turned into an out and changed the momentum of the inning. The C’s still managed to bring home another score on an Austin Smith groundout, but the game ended on a flyout in the next at-bat to cut the rally short.
Vancouver started the scoring in the fourth. Williams clubbed his first solo shot of the game to begin the frame and make it 1-0, though the Frogs rallied for two runs on two hits – including Northwest League leader Brandon Eike’s 22nd big fly of the season – in the home half to pull in front 2-1.
Another solo home run – the eighth of the series for Everett – in the fifth put the Frogs ahead 3-1. That was the last inning for starter Landen Maroudis (L, 2-9), who went five or more stanzas for the fourth consecutive outing and allowed three runs on five hits, walked one and K’ed four.
The ‘Sox scored for the third consecutive inning in the sixth, using a lead-off walk and a triple to lead 4-1. Meanwhile, Frogs starter Taylor Dollard (W, 4-8) retired the final 10 consecutive batters he faced in his seven-inning outing to keep Vancouver at bay over the middle innings.
The series rolls on tomorrow night. #18 Blue Jays prospect Silvano Hechavarria takes the ball opposite #18 Mariners prospect Colton Shaw. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. on the C’s Broadcast Network.
