The Washington Nationals acquired right-handed pitcher Andrew Istler from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ryan Madson on Friday. Additionally, the Nationals recalled left-handed pitcher Sammy Solis from Triple-A Syracuse. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.
Istler, 25, went 4-4 with a 2.37 ERA in 41 games (one start) between three levels of Los Angeles' Minor League system in 2018. He recorded 73 strikeouts against 19 walks (3.84 SO/BB), a 0.89 WHIP and held opposing batters to a .188 batting average. Of his 40 relief appearances, 30 were longer than one inning. 
Istler has tossed scoreless relief in his last eight outings dating to Aug. 4. During this stretch, opposing batters are 6-for-37 (.162) with nine strikeouts and four walks.
Selected in the 23rd round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, Istler has appeared in 128 professional games, going 10-11 with a 3.65 ERA along the way. He has struck out nearly one batter per inning (194 SO/197.0 IP) while posting a 3.73 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a professional.
Solis, 30, returns to the Nationals after being optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Aug. 14. He tossed scoreless relief in all five appearances with the Chiefs. He struck out nine batters, issued one walk and allowed two hits in the five outings.
Madson, 38, went 5-5 with five saves and a 4.08 ERA in 69 games for Washington. He was acquired by the Nationals -- along with Sean Doolittle -- from the Oakland Athletics on July 16, 2017.
