Roark to pitch for Team USA in WBC 2017

Nationals right-hander was invited before Scherzer had to bow out with stress fracture

Nationals right-hander has committed to play for Team USA in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi.
The addition of Roark should soften the blow suffered by Team USA when its projected ace, Max Scherzer, pulled out Monday on account of a stress fracture in his right ring finger.

Roark, who was invited by Team USA before Scherzer's injury was announced, is coming off an excellent 2016 season in which he went 16-10 with a 2.83 ERA and led the Majors with nine scoreless starts of at least seven innings.

Roark will be making his first World Baseball Classic appearance, joining a rotation that already includes Chris Archer, and Danny Duffy, and could potentially feature and should Team USA advance to the later rounds.

Team USA opens play in Pool C against Colombia at 6 p.m. ET on Friday, March 10, at Marlins Park in Miami.
