Haren 13th pitcher to beat all 30 MLB teams

Beating one Major League team figures to be difficult enough for a starting pitcher. Beating all 30 of them, however, is nothing short of pitching history.

Before Friday night, only 12 hurlers had earned a win against all 30 Major League franchises. By knocking off the Phillies -- in a 9-2 Nationals win -- with his seven solid innings, Washington's Dan Haren became lucky No. 13.

The veteran right-hander joined the exclusive club that includes a pair of former Cy Young Award winners in Randy Johnson and Barry Zito.

"Yeah, it's pretty cool," Haren said. "Last time I was facing the Phillies, I had seen it. I think it's something to be proud of. It kind of just shows longevity. I've played for just the right amount of time in both leagues, too. So that plays into it. I've been around for a while and they're the one team I could never beat, so I'm sure I'll face them here a couple more times this year and hopefully I can continue."

Along with Zito and Haren, Pittsburgh's A.J. Burnett is the only other active pitcher on the list. Milwaukee's Kyle Lohse has defeated 29 clubs, but lost in his only start against Minnesota earlier this season.

Al Leiter was the first pitcher to accomplish the feat by defeating the D-backs on April 30, 2002.

The full list includes Leiter, Johnson, Zito, Burnett, Haren, Kevin Brown, Terry Mulholland, Curt Schilling, Woody Williams, Jamie Moyer, Javier Vazquez, Vicente Padilla and Derek Lowe.

In seven previous starts against the Phillies, Haren had gone 0-4 with a 5.54 ERA.
