Rockies claim RHP Jorge Rondon off waivers from St. Louis

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has claimed right-handed pitcher Jorge Rondon off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. To make room on the 40-man roster for Rondon, the Rockies have designated right-handed pitcher Rob Scahill for assignment. 

"We are excited to add another power right-hander to compete in our bullpen," said Rockies Senior Vice President/General Manager Jeff Bridich. "Jorge is coming off a productive season at Triple-A for St. Louis and we believe he is ready to turn the corner and will hopefully impact us at the Major League level next season."

Rondon, 26, made his Major League debut this past season on June 29^th with a scoreless inning against the Dodgers, which stands as Rondon's lone appearance in the Majors. The Calabozo, Venezuela native was originally signed by St. Louis as a non-drafted free agent on July 3, 2006 and had spent his entire professional career in the Cardinals organization. In what was his ninth Minor League season in 2014, Rondon went 5-4 with 10 saves, a 3.03 ERA (62.1 ip, 21 er), 20 walks and 51 strikeouts in 51 games at Triple-A Memphis. Over his Minor League career, Rondon is 21-47 with a 4.64 ERA (529.1 ip, 273 er), 250 walks and 389 strikeouts in 309 games, 41 starts.

Scahill, 27, made 12 appearances for the Rockies in 2014, his third-straight season to see Major League action. In 2014, Scahill went 1-0 with a 4.80 ERA (15.0 ip, 8 er), 9 walks and 11 strikeouts in those 12 outings. He spent the majority of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where in 41 games he went 2-3 with a 4.32 ERA (58.1 ip, 28 er), 18 walks and 53 strikeouts. In his three Major League seasons for Colorado, Scahill combined to go 2-0 with a 4.42 ERA (57.0 ip, 28 er), 21 walks and 35 strikeouts.

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
