White Sox and first baseman Adam LaRoche agree to terms on two-year contract

The Chicago White Sox and first baseman Adam LaRoche have agreed to terms on a two-year, $25-million contract. Under terms of the contract, LaRoche, 35, will receive $12 million in 2015 and $13 million in 2016.

To make room for LaRoche on the 40-man roster, the White Sox have designated right-handed pitcher Scott Carroll for assignment.

LaRoche, 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, batted .259 (128-494) with 26 home runs, 92 RBI, 73 runs scored and 82 walks in 140 games last season with Washington. He tied for fifth in the National League in RBI, ranked sixth in walks, seventh in home runs, 15th in on-base percentage (.362) and 16th in OPS (.817) and also was a finalist for the Gold Glove Award among NL first basemen.

LaRoche, who bats and throws left-handed, hit .280 (100-357) with 21 homers, 76 RBI and a .501 slugging percentage against right-handed pitching in 2014. He ranked among the NL leaders vs. right-handers in on-base percentage (3rd, .390), RBI (T4th), home runs (T6th), and OPS (10th, .891)

"Adam's signing addresses several important needs for our club heading into the 2015 season," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "He provides a proven left-handed bat in the middle of our lineup, brings a valuable mix of the ability to get on base and power, and he is a veteran leader on the field and in the clubhouse."

LaRoche, a native of Orange, Calif., is a career .264 (1,363-5,164) hitter with 319 doubles, 243 home runs, 838 RBI and 711 runs scored in 1,478 games over 11 major-league seasons with Atlanta (2004-06), Pittsburgh (2007-09), Boston (2009), Arizona (2010) and the Nationals (2011-14).

He has recorded 20 or more home runs eight times in his career, 30-plus doubles six times and 100 RBI twice. LaRoche also owns a .995 fielding percentage at first base.

LaRoche finished sixth in NL Most Valuable Player Voting in 2012 after hitting .271 (155-571) with a career-high 33 home runs and 100 RBI while winning both the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Awards.

His brother, Andy (2007-13), and father, Dave (1970-83) both played in the major leagues. Dave coached for the White Sox from 1989-91. LaRoche originally was selected by Atlanta in the 29th round of the 2000 draft.

Carroll, 30, went 5-10 with a 4.80 ERA (69 ER/129.1 IP) and 64 strikeouts in 26 games (19 starts) with Chicago in 2014, his first season in the major leagues.

The White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
