2014 Blue Jays award winners

The Toronto chapter of the BBWAA held their annual vote and selected the following players as recipients of 2014 awards. OF JOSE BAUTISTA was the unanimous choice for the Neil MacCarl Award as Player of the Year. RHP MARK BUEHRLE also was selected as Pitcher of the Year, while RHP MARCUS STROMAN was unanimously named Rookie of the Year. OF MELKY CABRERA was the Most Improved, while the John Cerutti Award was bestowed upon RHP CASEY JANSSEN.

BAUTISTA, 34, led the Majors in All-Star balloting, participating in his 5th consecutive MLB All-Star Game (making 4th consecutive starting appearance). This marks his 3rd award in five seasons after picking up back-to-back honours in 2010 & 2011.  

BUEHRLE, 35, earned his 1st Blue Jays selection by narrowly coming out ahead in the voting over R.A. DICKEY. 2014 marked the 14th consecutive season surpassing the 200.0+ innings plateau and extended his streak of 10+ wins, 30+ starts and 200+ innings to 14 seasons representing the longest active streak in the Majors.

STROMAN, 23, earned Rookie of the Year award after going 10-6 with a 3.29 as a starter. Among rookies he ranked T-4th in wins (11) and 3rd in winning pct. (.647) despite ranking only T-10th in starts (20). His .625 winning pct. as a starter is the highest in club history as a rookie.

CABRERA, 30, posted a .301 average with a .808 OPS in 139 games after hitting .279 with a .682 OPS in 2013. At the time of his injury on September 6, Cabrera ranked 2nd in MLB with 171 hits.

JANSSEN, 33, earns the distinguished John Cerutti Award, given to a person that exemplifies the goodwill, cooperation and character as displayed by the late John Cerutti. Janssen receives the honour after completing his 8th season at the Major League level and 11th overall in the organization. The veteran right-hander carried himself in an exemplary fashion on and off the field and is a well-deserved recipient.
