D-backs Acquire Ray and Leyba from Tigers for Gregorius

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) acquired left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray (@robbieray22) and infielder Domingo Leyba from the Detroit Tigers for infielder Didi Gregorius, as announced by D-backs Senior Vice President & General Manager Dave Stewart.

Ray was the Tigers' second-best prospect according to MLB.com and seventh-best per Baseball America. Leyba was the Tigers' fifth-best prospect according to Baseball America and eighth-best per MLB.com

Ray, 23, entered last season as the Tigers' fourth-best prospect according to Baseball America. He split time between the Tigers, his first Major League action, and Triple-A Toledo. In 9 games (6 starts) for the Tigers, he went 1-4 with an 8.16 ERA (26 ER in 28.2 IP). He won his Major League debut on May 6 vs. Astros at age 22, and in his second start threw 6.0 shutout innings with 4 hits in a no-decision. In his first 3 starts, he allowed 1 run in 12.0 innings.

In 20 games (19 starts) for Toledo, he was 7-6 with 4.22 ERA (47 ER in 100.1 IP). In his first 7 games (6 starts), he was 3-2 with a 1.93 ERA (7 ER in 32.2 IP) and over his first 13 outings (12 starts), he went 5-3 with a 2.74 ERA (20 ER in 65.2 IP). Following the season, he made 4 starts for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League and went 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA (3 ER in 11.0 IP).

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder was also previously rated by Baseball America as the Washington Nationals' fifth-best prospect following the 2013 season. Ray was acquired by the Tigers on Dec. 2, 2013 along with left-handed pitcher Ian Krol and infielder/outfielder Steve Lombardozzi for right-handed pitcher Doug Fister. Ray was the Nationals' 12th-round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Over parts of 5 Minor League seasons in the Nationals (2010-2013) and Tigers' (2014) organizations, Ray is 24-26 with a 4.27 ERA (208 ER in 438.0 IP) in 90 games (87 starts).

Leyba, 19, entered last season as the Tigers' ninth-best prospect per Baseball America and hit .323 (84-for-260) with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homers and 24 RBI in a combined 67 games at Short-Season A Connecticut and Single-A West Michigan. He saw action in 48 games at second base and 20 games at shortstop. Following the season, he played in 13 games for Glendale in the Arizona Fall League.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound switch hitter was the Tigers' Dominican Summer League Player of the Year in 2013. He led the league with a .348 average and .577 slugging percentage as well as tied for second with 28 extra-base hits and ranked fourth with a .446 on-base percentage. He was signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2012.

Gregorius, 24, hit .241 (151-for-627) with 25 doubles, 8 triples, 13 homers and 55 RBI in 183 games over parts of 2 seasons with the D-backs (2013-14).
