Detroit Tigers Acquire Alfredo Simon from Cincinnati Reds in Exchange for Eugenio Suarez and Jonathon Crawford

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has acquired righthanded pitcher Alfredo Simon from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infielder Eugenio Suarez and righthanded pitcher Jonathon Crawford.

"Alfredo Simon is a pitcher that we like a great deal and will be slotted into our starting rotation," said Tigers President, CEO and General Manager, David Dombrowski. "Alfredo had a fine season last year, made the National League All Star team, and we're excited to him have join our ballclub."

Simon, 33, compiled a 15-10 record, 3.44 ERA (196.1IP/75ER) and 127 strikeouts in 32 games started for the Reds in 2014. He posted a 12-3 record, 2.70 ERA (116.2IP/35ER) and 75 strikeouts in the first half of the season to earn a spot on his first All-Star team. Simon established career highs in wins, starts, quality starts (22), innings pitched and strikeouts in 2014. Lefthanded batters batted .251 (93x370) off Simon this past season, while righthanded batters hit .238 (88x369) off him.  

In parts of seven seasons at the major league level with the Baltimore Orioles and Reds organizations, Simon has compiled a 32-28 record, 3.86 ERA (529.1IP/227ER) and 373 strikeouts in 51 games started (209 games). The 6-6, 265 lbs. pitcher was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999.

Suarez, 22, batted .242 (59x244) with 33 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, four home runs and 23 RBI in 85 games for the Tigers in 2014.  

Crawford, 23, posted an 8-3 record, 2.85 ERA (123.0IP/39ER), and 85 strikeouts for Single A West Michigan in 2014. He was originally selected by the Tigers in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft in 2013.
