Over $175,000 raised for LUNGevity through MLB.com auction of unique baseball experiences and items

Yankees Fan Experience with GM Attracts Top Sale of $11,026.67

Major League Baseball and its 30 Clubs, MLB Network and MLB Advanced Media raised more than $175,000 through an MLB.com auction that featured over 80 unprecedented baseball experiences and rare items during last week¡¦s Winter Meetings for LUNGevity, the largest national lung cancer-focused nonprofit.

Inspired by members of the baseball family who have been directly affected by cancer, the Winter Meetings auction, which began three years ago, has raised over $450,000 for cancer research, with this year¡¦s total being the highest since the auction¡¦s inception. The 2014 auction honored the memory of Baltimore Orioles Public Relations Director Monica Barlow, who fought a courageous battle with lung cancer until her passing in February of this year. Barlow was a proud and active supporter of LUNGevity. Proceeds from previous years¡¦ auctions were donated to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C).

The top-selling experience, which went for $11,026.67, was a meet-and-greet with New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, along with the opportunity to watch a regular season game from his suite. More than half of the experiences were awarded to bids of $1,000 or more, and the top 10 went for over $4,000 apiece. Some of the highest-selling experiences include:

  •    A once-in-a-lifetime All-Access 2015 All-Star Media Experience ($10,201.00)
  •    Detroit Tigers World Series Fantasy Batting Practice ($9,025.00)
  •    A meet-and-greet with Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully ($6,325.00)
  •    Bowling with San Francisco Giants World Series Champions Jeremy Affeldt and Javier Lopez ($6,025.00)

The goal is to create a world where no one dies from lung cancer.

LUNGevity was founded in 2001 by seven lung cancer survivors, and tens of thousands of others affected by lung cancer have joined in the years since. We will continue to build on that dedication and momentum to inspire the nation to commit to ending lung cancer.
