Astros Urban Youth Academy to host "Scout Day" Showcase Event

Scouts from several MLB clubs scheduled to attend

The Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy will host "Scout Day" on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m. for selected players at the UYA located at Sylvester Turner Park (2801 S. Victory Drive).

From the Astros, Director of Player Development Quinton McCracken, Amateur Scouting Director Mike Elias and scout Noel Gonzales will attend the event along with scouts from several other Major League clubs.

The event is invitation-only for the players. Close to 60 players, aged 15-18, are scheduled to participate, most of whom workout and receive instruction at the UYA. Players will have the opportunity to display their infield, outfield, hitting and pitching skills.

Media are welcome to attend the event. The on-site contact is Daryl Wade, Director of the Astros Urban Youth Academy (281-795-1851).

The Astros Urban Youth Academy (UYA), which officially opened in 2010, is run by the Astros Foundation and provides free baseball and softball instruction, life skills training and academic support to Houston youth, with a focus on serving inner-city and at-risk children and teens. Baseball and softball camps, clinics and other activities are provided by experienced instructors. UYA staff also provide mentoring, leadership development and assistance with the college application process. The Astros were the first Major League club to open an Urban Youth Academy.
