Rangers acquire C Carlos Corporan from Houston for RHP Akeem Bostick

RHP Gonzalez Germen designated for assignment to make room on 40-man roster

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has acquired catcher Carlos Corporan from the Houston Astros in exchange for minor league RHP Akeem Bostick.

To make room for Corporan on the 40-man roster, RHP Gonzalez Germen has been designated for assignment.

Corporan, 31, was designated for assignment by Houston on Tuesday to make room for free agent OF Cody Rasmus on the Astros major league roster. The switch-hitter batted .235 with 6 homers and 19 RBI in 55 games as the Astros' backup catcher in 2014. He was sidelined with concussion-like symptoms from August 20-September 9. He posted a .992 (3 E/387 TC) behind the plate a year ago, making 48 starts.

Corporan is a career .226 hitter with 17 homers and 63 RBI in 199 major league games with Milwaukee (2009) and Houston (2011-14). He has started 167 games at catcher for the Astros over the last four seasons with a high of 51 starts in 2013. He has a .243 career average versus lefthanders while 14 of his 17 career homers have been hit against RHP.

On August 12, 2013 at Minute Maid Park, Corporan ended Yu Darvish's no-hit bid with a solo home run with one out in the eighth inning, the second time Darvish took a no-hitter into the eighth versus Houston that season.

Originally selected by Milwaukee in the 2003 First Year Player Draft, Corporan played in the Brewers and Diamondbacks farm systems before being signed by Houston as a minor league free agent in November 2010.

Bostick, 19, was 5-6 with a 5.17 ERA in 21 games/20 starts for Low-A Hickory of the South Atlantic League in 2014. The right-hander was selected by Texas in the second round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft.

Germen was acquired from the New York Yankees for cash considerations on Tuesday. He was designated for assignment by the Yankees on January 13. The Yankees had acquired him in a December 19 trade for cash considerations after Germen was designated for assignment by the New York Mets on December 15. He had no record and a 4.75 ERA (16 ER/30.1 IP) in 25 relief appearances for the Mets last season. Texas has 10 days to trade, release, or outright Germen to the minor leagues.

With today's trade, the Rangers' roster remains at the 40-man limit.
