Astros agree to terms with IF Marwin Gonzalez
All arbitration-eligible players now under contract
The Houston Astros have agreed to terms with infielder Marwin Gonzalez on a one-year contract, General Manager Jeff Luhnow announced today. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
As a result of the Gonzalez deal, all players on the Astros current roster that had been arbitration-eligible have now agreed to terms on contracts.
Gonzalez, 25, reached career highs in virtually every offensive category in 2014, including games (103), at-bats (285), batting average (.277) and home runs (6), in his role as a utility infielder. A switch-hitter, Gonzalez hit .333 (13x39) vs. left-handed pitching and .268 (66x246) vs. righties. Defensively, Gonzalez appeared in 71 games at shortstop (64 starts), 11 at second base (5 starts), 10 at third base (6 starts) and one in left field, right field and at first base.
Gonzalez has been with the Astros since being acquired from the Red Sox on Dec. 8, 2011 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Marco Duarte. Prior to the trade, he had been selected by the Red Sox that same day in the Rule 5 Draft from the Chicago Cubs.
In addition to Gonzalez, the other signed players on the Astros current roster that had been arbitration-eligible are: Chris Carter, Jason Castro, Hank Conger, Alex Presley, Tony Sipp, Luis Valbuena.
